Thank you for posting these videos! It's extremely helpful to actually be able to see someone else play the tunes. :-)

Tbone,
I enjoyed hearing some of these, and am looking forward to some progress videos! Good to see some BRYCU posts - I thought that book was really good. I got thru about 2/3 to 3/4 of both it and BYCU and would like to get back to them. Same story as yours - job, wife, kids, life - really eats into my guitar time. : )
I'll see if I can figure out how to record videos and post to YouTube (I'm sort of technically challenged)

Try Fast Fret by GHS. It's a string cleaner and lubricant. I use it when my strings are getting old and dull sounding.
I hope it works for you.

tbone,
I've got to give you a pat on the back for these! I'm still listening, but haven't been playing since I hurt my index finger last summer. It's slowly getting better... Don't know if I can be as prolific as you've been, but would like to put up some videos sometime. You're really overcoming some adverse conditions it sounds like - keep up the work and you'll continue to improve.

How are you coming along? I hadn't been using the BYCU curriculum for quite a while. I had gotten to Lesson 12 and was really enjoying it but got sidetracked. Now that I'm ready to get back at it, I can't find the accompaniment CD. It's here somewhere. I had taken it and a few others I had and put them in a CD carrier so they'd be organized and out of the way…I just can't remember where I put them. Until I find the CD I'm going back over the first 12 lessons to make sure I'm rooted before I move on. I don't have video capability but ordered a Tascam 6-track recorder from Musician's Friend this past week when they had it as a Stupid Deal of the day. When it comes I'll see what I can do about making some MP3's to upload as long as I've found the backing track CD by then.

Tbone,
I got a kick out of rewatching some of those - I always find that hearing something I recorded in the past either makes me realize that I've improved a lot, but unfortunately, sometimes makes me realize I've been away from playing for too long. I didn't mean to toss down a gauntlet on videos - it sounds like I've got way easier conditions to work under than what you've got.
I personally think you improve your skills more to take on new material rather than re-learning stuff you've done in the past, but that's just my opinion. I hope you can decide what you want to play, then get some functional equipment, then just do it!

T-Bone,
Did you complete More BYCU? If not, I'd continue with that, because it's loaded with stuff to learn. It has some very interesting and useful rhythm material in additional to lead. However, if you've finished it, then I agree with Bruce, move on.
I think if I were finished with More BYCU I'd go back to BYCU and re-work those studies by using the basic themes and adding my own stuff over the same backing tracks. Just an idea.

Hi Tbone, I think slow tempi are the most difficult to feel for a lot of people. I personally experience the same and I know a lot in that situation. No worries Cheers, Big Fab

tbone, More Blues You Can Use is s fun lesson book. I think you'll like it. When I finish Jazzin' The Blues I believe I'm going to go back through BYCU and MBYCU, just to see if I can do it any better this time!

Tbone,
Listened to "D Minor Blues", "G Minor Blues" and "Got The Drive". I thought they sounded pretty good in terms of your timing and rhythm. I can see definite progress from some of your older videos. It's obvious you don't have all the equipment I have available to make my videos - sounds like you're working under some pretty spartan conditions, so I can only appreciate that you're making do with what you've got available. Can you share some "technical" details - what kind of laptop are you using? what OS? what kind of video software? are you recording audio separately, or on the video software? is your audio input the on board microphone or some other?
Also, do you play left handed or right handed? some of your videos seem to go each way? Like I said, I don't mean to be critical, but thought maybe I could offer suggestions to help with videos. I'm intending to try to make a video showing how I've made my videos, but have been "off the air" recently. Thanks for sharing these. I love the BRYCU book - I thought the rhythm studies did more to advance my playing than probably anything else.

Tbone,
That little amp looks like fun - of course I'm always game to play with new equipment! What software are you recording the video with? is audio recorded in the same software? what are you using to play the backing tracks (an mp3 player?, a cd player?, etc) ?
As far as the left hand - right hand thing, there should be some setting in the video software that does this - "mirror imaging" or such.

Tbone,
I'm familiar with VLC player, but not with Youcam. I'll probably have some computer time this weekend, so I'll try to read some on it. Does your laptop have a microphone input plug or a line input jack? if so, what kind of jack is it (1/8" plug, etc) ?
I think people learning guitar from books enjoy seeing what type of music is in a book before buying, also what type of "skill" level people may develop from studying the book, so I think the videos on Youtube serve a good purpose. Not finding any videos for Jazzin' the Blues is one of the reasons I decided I would post some. It's also been a good learning experience trying to make the videos - much like making audio recordings of your playing.

Tbone,
The rhythm on "Passing Chord Rhythm in A" sounds good. I don't remember the part well enough to recognize what you left out. I'm away from home, so I'll have to dig out my disc when I get home to hear it.
I like your idea of a video collaboration. To do this, though, we'd need to improve your recorded audio quality, and get your guitar alone on an isolated channel. That's why I was inquiring about your computer's mic input jack. Can your version of Youcam make MP4 (MPEG-4) video (website says current version can) ? Also, do you have any audio recording software? If not, Audacity is a freeware program that should allow you to record audio (you will need to record audio and video separately in different programs AT THE SAME TIME. If you use Audacity, I think you also need their Lame encoder to make mp3's. I think if you can record MP4 video AND save your guitar track alone as a WAV or mp3, we should be able to make this happen.

Nice job on those Tbone! I just did Hard Rocker myself - I remember working on getting that very last chord just perfect, and then in the finished recording it was completely buried under the lead guitar part and you couldn't hear it anyway lol. I like that song from Blues Rhythms You Can Use, I'm just starting on that book myself. Tons of great ideas for songwriting in there.
You're really churning out the songs, keep up the good work!

Hey Tbone, yeah I worked through about the first three-quarters of BYCU years ago as well, but then I didn't touch a guitar for a long time and just got back into it a couple of months ago. I was wondering, does the Blues Chords You Can Use book have songs in it to learn? I imagine the point of it is to help you with your own songwriting, but I was just curious. I also just got the Rhythm & Blues You Can Use book yesterday and I'm absolutely loving that stuff. I'm only on the very first song but it is so stylish and beautiful. Maybe John will make a good guitar player out of me yet EDIT: Oh never mind about the Chord book, I just realized I bought it ten years ago and it's sitting right here in my drawer LOL. I am such an idiot.

Jack, you now have me curious. Does the Blues Chords You Can Use book have songs in it to learn? It doesn't come with a CD, but there are tons of chord progressions you could play along with a drum track or something.
