I'm not terribly happy with this but it's gotten to the point where i could probably do 100 more takes and not do much better. This was also supposed to a full band video but I deleted a bunch of old videos off my hard drive, secure in the assumption that having saved the project to my Sony Vegas Movie Studio software, I could get rid of the original videos in the Logitech Webcam folder. Yeah...turns out that's not how it works Anyhow, without further ado... Let me know what you think - criticisms are as always cheerfully accepted I've been practicing this for so long I can't tell if the overall effect is pleasing to the ear or just complete rubbish.

The rhythm part was really solid, but on the lead part you sounded a bit weary - maybe you over-rehearsed it? But certainly a good performance overall - not one I could redo.

Thanks for the input Joachim. Yeah that's an interesting point, now that I listen to it again it does kind of sound like the whole thing is lagging. I've noticed in the past that when I play along with the backing track a bunch of times without going back and playing along with John on the CD, I start developing a real lazy sense of timing and getting behind the beat. I'll have to pay more attention to that in the future.
Thanks for pointing that out, I appreciate it!

Jack always an enjoy tom listen to your tracks, like you pointed out seems like the was some lag or something in the recording, I have a problem sometimes where I have to restart Garageband because its starts something similar. I liked the guitar tone, but not sure if it was the lag or what but some spots just didn't seem spot on like your normal stuff. Anyway that looks really hard to play.

Thanks Rich, I wish I could blame it on my recording equipment but I'm afraid I'll have to take full responsibility myself I just seem to have problems with these very rhythmic type of solos. I'll practice this some more and post a new version in a week or two - that will give me a chance to re-do the rhythm guitar and bass videos while I'm at it. Thanks for the input!

Well the BYCU Jazz tune gave me a problem and I decided to move on.

Well the BYCU Jazz tune gave me a problem and I decided to move on. Yeah I am kind of practiced out with this one at the moment, but I really like this song and would like to do it justice Probably be good practice too since I seem to have a problem with these sorts of songs.

Good job with that Jack, but I can also hear the something is not quite up to Jack standards . Just a thought here, when did you last change your strings? I have noticed that the first tell tale signs of strings wearing out is not only a dull tone but also the intonation starts to drift off... just maybe that's what is making sound a little off.

Thanks Mick, yeah those strings are old, that's probably about the third high E I've put on there. Guess it's probably time to put a whole new set on

It's been like a desert around here and then all of a sudden 3 recording get posted on the same day. Rich and Joachim deprived me of an opportunity to give someone a smackdown, and lo and behold! along comes Jack serving me a smackdown opportunity on a golden platter. In all seriousness it sounds like you are just worn out. It's like you posted a video of the final 1/4 mile of a marathon and are asking for a critique of your running form. The string thing that Mick mentioned may also be playing a part in the overall sound. It started out sounding really good and your tone is perfect for this style of music. I'm sure we will be seeing a retake on this one very soon that will be up to your usual standards.

Jack, I enjoyed the listen - it has been silent around here the past few days, and I've been doing my part to keep it that way. I think the song sounds pretty cool, but I thought your lead tone sounded kind of thin, or maybe it was just too far down in the mix. I know this kind of stuff is "personal taste". If I ever go back in my studio, I'll dig out the CD and see how it sounds on JG's recording for comparison. I enjoy that kind of funky and soulful music!

Oh, and sorry to hear about your deleted files. A lot of DAW software will do the same thing - that is, the original "source" location is referenced, but not stored as part of a project itself. I know in Logic you can choose whether you want source files saved as part of a project. As you've found out, it can be important to figure out how your software handles this, and whether you can specify.

Thanks guys! And Phil thanks for not giving me the full smackdown treatment I remember when I was working on Crescent City Rhythm, which was another one of these very rhythmic solos, that I was having a heck of a time not lagging behind the beat - though at least with that one I did manage to get one take with good timing, which I posted. That time I noticed what I was doing, but for some reason with this one I didn't. I have a real problem with missing notes in this song (as you may have noticed from my video ) and I suppose I got so caught up in trying to play it cleanly that I didn't notice that I was missing the timing completely. That's one of the things that's great about this forum, having all you guys to hear stuff I missed! I'm confused about the guitar sound now though - Phil says it's perfect and Bruce says it's thin I did go with a more bright sound for that one to get the lead to kind of stand out more, but maybe it's a bit too bright. Bruce thanks for the commiseration about my deleted files, that was so stupid of me; I just notice my hard drive was half full and thought that was really odd (it's 1 TB) and decided to get rid of a bunch of older webcam videos. Oh well, live and learn I guess.

Just out of curiosity, is this one any better or is it "weary" as well?
I did this a couple of weeks ago before I deleted the other video files.

It could be that I have more fat between my ears than Bruce does, and that's probably why he hears it as sounding thinner.

Thanks Phil, I was just practicing along with John on the CD and I think I discovered I was starting every phrase a titch late. He's kind of starting them in anticipation of the beat and I was starting them on the beat. Or something like that I'll work on that for a few days and make a new recording - gonna take a while to develop a new sense of timing after practicing it wrong several hundred times lol.
