Here's my version. Tried something new - just recording the video with the built in camera on my laptop. Learned something new - I've got to tell it to flip the image BEFORE recording... Oh, well, I'll do better next time!

Sounds good, Rich, but you're still playing it over the intro and not the 1st four bars. Having said that, the way you're playing it works just fine. Many of these Blues licks are quite adaptable. Have you tried it over the the first 4 bars and see if you can nail that tricky timing?

I think you pretty much nailed the timing and that's the hardest thing about this lick. No comment on the bends. I'm in no position to criticize anybody's bends.
Also, the quality of your laptop camera is impressive. I watched on my big TV and it looked very good.

Great one, Bruce. I am with Phil, nailed the timing - maybe the bend was a little off. But great timing, feel and tone!
I am looking forward to the next batch of licks you'll throw at us.
Rich, I also enjoyed yours. I agree it's nice and relaxed. The timing can still be tightened up a little, I think, but really nice.

Rich, now you've got the lick over the first four bars of the 12 bar progression! Your timing is a little different than how it is notated in the book, but that's part of taking a lick and making it your own. Thanks for sharing those with us.
Joachim and Phil, thanks for your comments. Yeah, bending is the first thing to go when you lay off for a while! I've been playing Bending the Blues from BYCU, trying to practice my bending. I think maybe putting some new strings on my guitar would also help. Phil, the computer is a fairly recent model MacBook Pro, and it does have a pretty high resolution built in camera. I set all this up in our kitchen, where there are two full-wall windows and the lighting was really good. I think I have to set the camera to 16:9 aspect ratio before recording, so I don't get the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. This is part of a quest to make recording both video and audio as simple (and portable) as possible. It's the first time I've recorded this way, and I'll learn from my mistakes. If only learning to play was so easy - just make a mistake, then never make that same mistake again!

I think adding the stuff in the intro had me rushing, but having fun with it.

No video yet, but here's me noodling around with this lick. This is the first time I've played my Squier Strat since I got the Ibanez archtop and that's been a couple of years. The Ibanez is strung up with 13s and I ain't no SRV. Lick #1Phil, that was a great solo you improvised there, building up on a given theme and really taking the listener on a ride... I really enjoyed how you held and released tension in your links devolopped little melodies and strung them together. This really could stand on It's own as a solo in a tune, bring part of a bigger story. Gold stuff- keep it up! And why not going for a cleaner sound with some bite whilst at it, I dare you! Seriously, now all the hard work you put intoniert this pass off, and it shows - kudos in that!!! Wow, T-Bone, thanks. I didn't realize I did all that. I was just trying to throw in some stuff to fill up the other 8 bars after the lick. If I now record a video I'll probably screw it all up by trying too hard to play something clever.

Man you guys are all coming up with some great stuff! Phil that was awesome, "filling up the other 8 bars" lol, I was trying to do that yesterday and it was more like filling up the garbage can I hope to get something recorded before the deadline, this is giving me a good chance to work on not letting bends "unbend" a bit before ending them, and I can screw around with switching between major and minor, adding a bit of mixolydian and dorian, etc. Could also add some of those BB King licks I've been learning...lots of ideas now watch I'll just record the lick and hit "stop" in Reaper

You guys are getting way too easy to please. Where's the old "smack down" attitude.
I don't want to over analyze this or make too big a deal about it, but here's the way I approached this.
My goal was to play the lick over bars 1-4 in each chorus then continue with something that carried on the general feel of it and complimented it. I did play over the backing track a few times before I hit "record". However, I didn't plan out every single detail like I usually do. So I guess you can say it was improvised. Actually, I don't believe improvisation is just flying by the seat of your pants. I'm convinced that most improvisors have some idea of what they want to do before they do it. There is one thing I consciously tried to do: stay away from the comfortable and familiar pentatonic box 1 as much as possible. I even went to box 3. A pattern I almost never use. Even though each box pattern has exactly the same 5 notes the way you approach them is different. I also used more chromatic notes than I would have in the past. I think all this Jazz stuff is slowly creeping in.
What I'm afraid of now is I'll be so self-conscious about what I'm doing that any subsequent attempts at this are going to fall flat.

Nicely done, Jack. Really loved the tone you get out of your strat! I'd probably award Phil the Lick 1 crown, but his video production was just not up to the high standards we've come to expect on this forum I will personally claim the worst bend award, and we'll move on to Lick 2...

I like what you did there, Jack. Don't sell yourself short. I had fully intended to do a video. If I would force myself to do just one I'd probably break the inertia and do more. It's more about shear laziness than anything else. Plus, I probably would have screwed it up by trying too hard.
Thanks for the award, Coach Bruce. Do I get a trophy or something? I've never won anything before. Should I make an acceptance speech?

Well that was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't sure if anybody else was going to participate and then you and Jack upload some impressive sounding stuff at the last minute. I thought that sounded damn good. Looking forward to hearing what you do with Lick #2.

Good job, Grampa! Glad you're not going to be held back for remedial education! And you gave us an entire chorus of 12 bars, rather than gimping out like I did. I enjoyed the dissonant unison bends - very cool.

Guess that's why this is a Challenge, eh?

I enjoyed the dissonant unison bends - very cool. Thanks Bruce. Lick #1 is uncomfortable for me to play, just don't have a good feel for it as a musical statement. So the next 8 bars were my "reward" for grinding through the first 4. Those 2-note bends are semi-accidental, in this case just sort of went with it because I didn't want to have to try another take. My fingers were out of gas.
