Well here is an artistic take of Lazy Day Blues. Not exactly perfect, a couple of glitches keep popping into the track, and the usual bend issue. Anyway thought I would try something different. Lazy Day Blues Effected version soundcloud.com/alabama-blues/lazydayblues-effectedHope you like the idea if not the execution . Since I'm not a big fan of wah-wahs except in certain circumstances and for a short duration, I won't comment on the effect. However, there are a couple of measures with some tricky timing that you might want to work on. Watch out for those 8th rests that are snuck in all over the place and those dotted quarter notes tied to a normal quarter notes.

Watch out for those 8th rests that are snuck in all over the place and those dotted quarter notes tied to a normal quarter notes. I just realized that the 8th rests in measure 10 are dotted 8th rests. I had to spend some time figuring out how that could be since I haven't received my PHD in music theory yet. This is what I came up with. The tune is in 12/8 time which is actually counted in 4/4 time. So there are three 8th notes per beat and we count it - 1 and a, 2 and a, 3 and a, 4 and a. Beats 1 and 3 of bar 10 are 16th note sextuplets. The 1st 3 notes (?) are rests and you play the the 2nd half of the sextuplet. I don't think even Griff Hamlin could count this out loud.

I think that sounds pretty cool Rich, gives it an interesting flavor, that's for sure Your timing is pretty good for the most part though there are a few spots where it's off. On those two quick licks in bar 10 I think you left out the third note in each of them and went straight to the bend A couple of the bends are a bit off, but you're certainly making progress. Good job. I'll post my version Saturday - I'm still having trouble with those bends. Especially the one at the beginning of bar 9, I think that's one of those slightly slower ones and if I bend it up too fast it just sounds off.

Looking forwards to another version, I honestly didn't spend a lot of time on getting the recording 100percent, I did compare to my other version and timing is much better so progress is evident. I am not so sure I like the way effect so much but trying to see what other possibilities you have using the same song with some effects. I really wanted a Leslie type tone, but couldn't get a decent sounding effect. I am looking into tcelectronic a vibrato, cheaper than the other rotary sims, and does a pretty good Leslie effect as well as nice vibrato.

No, Jack, it doesn't need more practice. Practice is over and now it's show time. It sounds very good, and I don't see what you could do to make it any better. Very nice guitar, and excellent tone. I'm a little disappointed that you didn't throw in at least a chorus of your own. Maybe on the next one.

I dunno, I guess this song seemed to me like a completed composition as it is and I really couldn't think of anything to add...or something like that

Wow, Jack. The Epiphone is just beautiful. And your rendition of "Lazy Day Blues" - wow! The full package - nice tone, feeling, well-played. I've got nothing but good to say about that one. Nicely done!

Wow! I travel on business for a couple of days and the bar has been raised to adding a wah and other effects, adding your own choruses, AND new guitars! Man, you guys are out of control! I love checking in and hearing this stuff.

Thanks guys, glad you liked it! Mick, I don't understand that stage #6, "guilt". What is that? I go straight from "purchase" right back to "desire".

Jack I tried posting yesterday and must have not hit the save button. Beautiful guitar, love the color and tone. Is that a hollow body? Great playing as well. I think you are in the same gas cycle as I am.

I think you are in the same gas cycle as I am. Thanks Rich! Yeah that's a semi-hollow body with a block of wood in the center. So you start browsing for your next guitar before you've even thrown out the box the previous one came in too, eh?

Today is the deadline for submitting our versions of "Lazy Day Blues" so, here is my attempt. I ended up doing 2 choruses of my own instead of 3. I couldn't come up with a 3rd one that I liked. I finally got a good take last night, but I'm not real happy with some of the bends. I thought they sounded good while I was recording, but listening back today with fresh ears it's a different story. Anyway, here it is. 1st and last choruses are from the book. Choruses 2 & 3 are mine. Lazy Day Extended

Phil that was cool as hell, really smoldering blues solo Loved the bends to start your first chorus, the little trill lick, and the use of sixths was just great. I've never worked any sixths into a solo but you're like an old pro with them Man you've got some great creative ideas. The bends in that song are really challenging, especially that one in bar 9, I found it nearly impossible to get that one to pitch. But I think as long as we keep focusing on them, and agonizing over them, we should keep making progress. About my only other nitpick would be that the lead guitar could maybe be a little louder in the mix. Oh and you seem to have forgotten to do a video I suppose I'll do another poll today so we can choose our next BYCU review project for August. That way most everybody will get to see it tomorrow. I dunno, maybe keep voting open until Wednesday or so?

Phil - that was awesome! A real showcase of technique, concepts, and lessons learned. I would be interested in hearing about your method of adding your own parts. Did you tab it out first, or just jam along to work out the parts? I like how your parts take the laid back feel of the first chorus, ramp it up a bit in intensity, and then bring it back into that laid back, lazy day feel at the end. Nice work.

That was a great listen, Phil. Ditto what Jack said - I loved how you worked in some of those BYCU ideas into your two choruses. Care to share how you did the extended backing track?

Today is the deadline for submitting our versions of "Lazy Day Blues" Looks like I'm not going to come thru with a recording on time. Damn, late with my homework still, after all these years... Even without putting up a recording, I enjoyed digging out BYCU and dusting this one off. I think it's good practice, even if you don't find the time to make a recording. I'll hang with you guys on these reviews, but I'm not sure my time situation (or lack thereof, more specifically) will be much better for the next several months. Bruce
