Well here's my version, it's pretty boring compared to Phil's tour de force recording yesterday (but my video is a lot better ) I tried to write a chord-melody style solo; I know absolutely nothing about how to do that so I just, um...stuck a bunch of chords in there. I assume that's how it's done? My playing could use a little smoothing out - I spent another evening doing takes of this and did get it smoothed out pretty well, but all those takes had at least one gigantic screw up in them. Any constructive criticism / nitpicking etc. is very much encouraged. It helps my progress a whole lot if you guys tell me what I need to work on

That was great, Jack. You and Phil are really pulling away from the rest us! I think your chord-melody style worked just fine...

I give that a giant two thumbs up, Jack. I just loved your "chord" approach - just feels like a natural extension of the first verse. No question, you and Phil are pulling away from the crowd. Excellent job, and very nicely played. Phil really needs to work on is video production to match that one.

Great playing, Jack. I'm impressed with all the chord voicings you threw in. However you figured it out you did it right. As long as the melody is on top there are all kinds of ways to harmonize under it and you pulled it off. Actually, I took the easy way out and just did octaves. They're easier to move around and don't take much thought. After several listens I'm racking my brain trying to find some nit-picky thing to criticize, but can't find anything significant. You said there was some mistake in there, but I couldn't find it. Tom Bresh (Merl Travis's son) once complained to Chet Atkins (after Chet heard Tom play in concert) that he made all kinds of mistakes and didn't play what he had intended to play. Chet said something like, "I couldn't hear what you intended to play. I only heard what you did play and it sounded good to me."

That was a great listen, I enjoy listening to everyone's interpretations. I like the chord melody it really fits the mood of the song.

Thanks guys! Phil I meant that I did more takes and they all had huge mistakes, so I ended up using this one instead, which doesn't have a single huge mistake but I just thought the timing could use some more work to make it smoother overall.

I really liked your chord variations Jack, you definitely moved this lesson on to another level.

Jack and Phil - both versions were really sweet! I think it's awesome how you both started with the same piece of music and at the end of the day ended up with two entirely different results, both just as soulful and fitting as can be. Nice work fellas.
