I set it so you can select up to three answers, so pick a favorite and two alternates.

Is it a "review" if I haven't even started them yet? Or is it cheating?

My vote has been cast. As they used to say when I was growing up in Chicago, "Vote early, and vote often."

This is difficult cause I liked them all, my favorite to date is delta child but I am still learning that one so no vote for now.

Nice poll, thanks for putting this up. Well, I think I'll review them all, but only post soundfiles what is asked for... when is this supposed to start, anyway? I guess I'll close the poll on Monday to make sure everyone's had time to vote. Shall we say a month per song, because this will be a side project for everybody? So post recordings on or about July 15?

Sounds good. Maybe a good time to choose a different key to add variety.

Sounds good. Maybe a good time to choose a different key to add variety. That complicates things because we'd need a backing track in the new key. But, that's not a bad idea. In fact, the more I think about it the more I like it since we've already recorded these studies by the book. Let's see what everybody else has to say. I like this "brain storming" kind of stuff. We might come up with something totally different than the original idea. I suggest the we decide on the study 1st, and then get some ideas on how we're going to approach this - by the book, in a different key, same key with original stuff thrown in, by the book with an additional original chorus, etc., etc. Whatever we end up doing will be worth while, but 1st we all have to all agree.

One suggestion accommodating all wishes could be to generate a 3 chorus backing-track in BiAB. Then we could play the first chorus as in the tabs, in the second chorus we would improvise/compose on bars 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, 12 and play the other bars in the tabs, and in the third chorus we would improve over bars 1,2,5,6,9,10 and play the others as in the tabs. We wouldn't necessarily have to record it in one go, just starting out with new stuff like this it might be more efficient to record one chorus at a time if that's easier.
This way of improvising/composing over just some of the bars seems like an approach other books use for teaching improvisation, and initially you focus on matching the previous two bars, it's not supposed to be a new mind-boggling solo in 16th notes initially - just something that matches the previous two bars. Starting by writing an entire solo from scratch sounds a little overwhelming.
And for something like this one month sounds like a good time-frame.

8 people have voted so far. Since tomorrow is Sunday, and almost everybody checks out the forum, maybe we could have another poll with just the 2 or 3 highest voted studies to make a final selection. Right now it looks like it's down to "Bends, Slides and Shifts," with 3 votes, and "Lazy Day Blues," with 4 votes.

Just my two cents worth but I think it might work best if everybody did whatever they wanted; it's just more fun if you can follow your own ambitions. I was thinking that just getting the bends to pitch and getting a good guitar sound recorded would be enough of a challenge for me Also people have different amounts of time available and you don't want to make the project too time consuming for some or not challenging enough for others. But whatever you guys decide is fine by me. Phil go ahead and post a runoff poll if you want, or otherwise we can just go with Lazy Day Blues as we'll be having a new poll once this first project is finished anyway. It's all good man

Should I put up a poll to see if we should have a run -off poll? If "Lazy Day Blues" ends up with the most votes maybe we should just go with that. I have a tendency to over-complicate simple things sometimes. I like the idea of everybody doing whatever they want to do with the selected study, but I want to make sure everybody is clear that they have a choice to do it by the book, add in their own tweaks, add another chorus or whatever. After we decide which study to do, I recommend a deadline of Saturday 11 Jun. Everybody seems to visit the forum and post comments on Sundays, so Saturday would be a good day to get the recordings posted. That will also give us a full 4 weeks to get our stuff together.

Phrases / call-response work better with 2 bars minimum IMHO. What about doing 2 bar improvs? So, chorus two would have you improv over bars 3-4, 7-8, 11-12 (meaning you can do your own turnaround too!) and then chorus 3 would have you improvise 1-2, 5-6, 9-10. Just my opinion

I closed the poll - looks like Lazy Day Blues is our favorite! So I guess we've decided that everybody should do whatever they want with it: play it exactly like in the book, or make up your own parts, or play it in a different key, or do a death metal / polka version of it, whatever strikes your fancy. I guess Saturday, July 11 is the day to post our completed masterpieces
