Well, my practice this week was terrible. Barely got any in... however, on the upside I posted a minor blues recording of a solo I made up and it went down a storm!!!
This week - getting serious with the practicing!

I got in 5 days of practice for a total of almost 6 hours. "True Trem Blues" (specifically bars 13 -16) has become a brick wall for me. I've decided to move on, but continue to practice the difficult parts daily. If I don't move on I'll never catch up to Jack. I should be able to record "Big Bends" any day now even if it still sounds like crap. On the Jazz front I had to step back and re-evaluate what I was doing. I was falling back into my old habits of trying to learn everything at once and actually learning nothing. My focus is now on Jazzin' the Blues and a chord melody course I bought. I've been all over the Internet and have not found anything quite like Jazzin' the Blues. It is an excellent method for transitioning from Blues to Jazz and contains a lot of the necessary music theory to understand and play Jazz. Sometimes you discover that what you truly need is right in your own backyard. (I can't remember the exact quote from Wizard of OZ). I only set 2 goals for this week: transcribe "One Way Out" (Dicky Betts's 2 chorus solo) through bar 12 and record rhythm parts for "Big Bends" and "True Trem." I completed the 1st chorus of "One Way Out", but didn't get around to recording.

Due to golf, yard work and general laziness I only got in 11 1/2 hours on guitar and 1 1/2 on bass. Got started on Eight Bar Boogie, which seems fairly straightforward - except for the fact that it's at about 164 bpm. The rhythm part is almost more challenging than the lead. I'm messing around trying to find good lead and rhythm sounds on my Fender Mustang II amp. For the bass, it sounds like the guy on the CD is going down below low E (come to think of it I believe he was doing that on Groovin' Easy too). Maybe he's playing a 5 string, but in any event I found a basic boogie rhythm in one of my bass books so I'll just use that.
Worked on my improvising a bit, still trying to memorize the notes of the dominant 7th chords that fall within the scale. That's a very long term project but I think it will form an important foundation for everything that comes afterwards.
Hopefully this week I'll find a bit of time to work on that song from the Rhtyhm book and that other song from my TrueFire class.

I think I played every day except yesterday. I'd like to get at least some time in every day - even if it's only 10 or 15 minutes. I think the consistency is a good habit in itself. I think I've mastered Phil's habit of trying to learn everything at once and actually learning nothing...

"True Trem Blues" (specifically bars 13 -16) has become a brick wall for me. Oh man, can I ever sympathize with that I spent many hours slaving over those, doing exercises that were similar, running the riffs up and down the fretboard...anything I could think of.

I also think I played mostly every night, at least a little. Some nights I was too tired, so I just noodled around the scales and played through my BYCU and BRYCU studies once or twice, but mostly I had a decent week of practice. The final study in BRYCU is really tough - I admire Bruce's rendition of it. It's slowly falling into place though, perhaps in a week or two I can play it fluently.
I mostly work on scales, BYCU and BRYCU, but I also try to practice licks a little everyday hoping to apply them to improvisation one day...

Well I got in a solid 6.5 hours playing an min hour every day except Thursday when the week caught up and was just too damn tired, even thought I still played 10 minutes of scales.
I started memorizing Rockin and Rollin slow speed doing pretty good, did develop a blister on my first finger near the joint where I hold the chord.
I am also working on memorizing the chord shapes for the positions in the previous lesson.
I spent some time also working on using my slide, and a couple a zz top tunes.

The wheels fell off for me. I've been taking night classes for the last couple of years after work and just started finance. Anyway I had a little jam session with a buddy that is moving to Vancouver so that was cool, got the acoustic out and he played scales over my cowboy chords on electric. It was really fun after two beers. I figure if I just get that MBA and stop working stupid hours, I'm just going to dedicate all that extra time to THIS!!!!!!!
So much for my practice schedule! I did it twice. lol... I still like hanging out in the forum.
