I'm not terribly happy with the lead guitar in this, but I've been doing more takes of it for the last two days and this is still the best one lol. Anyhow let me know what you guys think.

I think it was excellent - which part aren't you happy about? You nailed the feel of the tune perfectly. My only suggestion would be to record either the rhythm or lead guitar on a brand new semi-hollow guitar; it would make it easier to separate the lead from the rhythm. Don't you have a birthday or another cause for celebration coming up soon?
I always enjoy listening to all those cool studies I haven't made it to - thanks for sharing!

Thanks Joachim, I thought the timing was a bit off around the part with the little descending triads that are hammered into (around 39-42 seconds) at least the first time around, and after the crescendo part on the rhythm guitar, the lead lick needed more of a climactic feel; I didn't stress that bit enough or get the timing quite right. I totally agree about the need for a brand new semi-hollowbody! Especially for the song I just started in More BYCU, it would fit perfectly. 'Fraid my birthday isn't coming until August though

That's probably my most favourite tune from John's CD when I'm listening in my car , I think you captured the feel of the tune perfectly. I'm certainly looking forward to tackling that one myself .

Thanks Mick, that's definitely one of my favorite songs in that book as well. Would probably sound fantastic on a brand new Laney amp I bet

'Fraid my birthday isn't coming until August though Those are those little nuances that you know you need to put into it because you are familiar with the tune. To the rest of us it sounds good as is. However, if you re-record this in a few weeks when you are able to put in those little, hard to define touches, and post a comparison I bet we will hear the difference. From a purely production (and personal) point of view, I think the rhythm on this tune would have sounded better a little louder and more in your face. It seems to me it should be punctuating a little stronger. Keep in mind that I haven't heard the original.

Thanks WPB, I appreciate it! Phil, yeah that song is deceptively hard to play - some of the licks are kind of quick, but it's a really slow song so you've got to be really relaxed and wait...wait...wait for that beat to arrive and - fire off that lick! I brought the rhythm guitar up just a touch: soundcloud.com/jack-c8/minor-soul-chopGave it a little EQ cut around 2 Khz to keep it out of the way of the lead a bit and added a little more compression to keep the louder parts from sounding too obnoxious.

Jack, sounding good from here, man. I'm not that familiar with the recording, so can't comment on how it compares, but to me it sounds really solid. Good timing, good tones. I really love the whole band thing, too. Fun to watch!

Jack I listened to the vid earlier today, and it was top notch. Since I read your post about making the lead more climatic I get what you mean, however if you hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have noticed. You always impress me with the one man band shows, keep it up.

I listened on headphones switching back and forth between them, and the EQ and compression made a big difference in sound for the better - at least to my ear. Did you finish the Coursera course or is it still going on?

Rich - thanks so much! Phil - thanks! Those Cousera classes have finished; the last week of the Music Production one was about some sort of software synthesizer, which I don't have, and I haven't watched those videos yet. But I downloaded all the videos for the entire course so I can finish it up whenever I want. The next class starts April 20th. Like I say, you can download all the videos and then just watch them at your leisure, so even if you've got a busy schedule you could still go through the whole thing with no problem.

Thanks for the info. If I had known you could download the videos and watch them later I would have signed up for that course back in Feb. I'll definitely sign up for the next one. I just finished watching a series of videos on recording by Alan Parson. It was very interesting and informative, however, it was not worth the $100.00 that my friend paid for it.

Yes, Jack, thanks for that valuable piece of information. I had the same concern that I wouldn't have the time for these courses, but if you can really download all the videos them watch them at your own piece, I may have to give this a go as well. Again, thanks Bruce
