Well, here's my extended version of "Jumpin' Blues." Choruses 1, 3, and 5 are right out of the book. Choruses 2 and 4 are mine. (Whether or not they are mine is debatable, but I put them together. ). There's a little attempt at a T-Bone Walker type thing towards the end of chorus 4. I'm still not completely happy with my playing here, but this was the best take I could get at the moment and I need to move on. I was reaching the point of diminishing returns after doing so many takes. The bass and drums were graciously provided by Jack1982. Thanks, Jack. Phil Jumpin' Blues Extended 02-27-15

I absolutely loved that Phil! You played the parts from the book beautifully - great timing and your bends and vibrato are excellent - yes your bends are excellent! - and your own parts fit perfectly with the song and were wonderfully written and performed! I think I hear a lot of Chuck Berry in there And thanks so much for the mention, the audience went wild lol You're really becoming a complete musician Phil, writing and performing some really great stuff. Truly fun and enjoyable to listen to.

Phil,
That was just awesome all around. Fun to listen to, hysterical ending, great playing. Your parts fit in without a hitch. Now that's really taking one of these studies and making it your own! I'm glad to hear some on the forum stretching their wings and flexing their muscles a bit. Great job. I think the ball is back in Jack's court to try to top that one.

I also think that was terrific, Phil. Very inspiring! I loved you added something of your own to the study...

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Glad you liked it. That rhythm section is really something, isn't it? I'm so familiar with this song now that I can hear every little flub that someone else might not notice. I'm still having plenty of technique issues to deal with - not sounding notes clearly, cutting notes short, rushing in places, etc. Hopefully these issues will be resolved with more practice. It's hard to concentrate on the nuances when you are still struggling with the technique. If you compare the 2 choruses I did you'll see that they are very very similar. If fact, the same little lick is used over and over with slight variations or played on different areas of the neck. This wasn't intentional and I only noticed it after I almost had the whole thing down. That discovery gave me some insight into how to approach something like this in the future. Before, whenever I tried to come up with something of my own, I always went on a fishing expedition around the fretboard trying to find notes that went together. This time I had it almost entirely worked out in my head first, and then figured out how to play it. I think this is the ultimate goal - to be able to play what you hear in your head. The benefits of a forum like this are way more important than most people realize, especially in the absence of a real live teacher. There is no way I would put forth the effort and stay so focused without the goal of recording and posting the results here and getting feedback. I would simply do what I did in the past - get something down half-assed, move on to the next thing and never make any observable progress.

This time I had it almost entirely worked out in my head first, and then figured out how to play it. I really admire your ability to do that. I come up with something in my head, but as soon as I pick up a guitar my fingers come across something else and all ideas about playing what I intended go out the window. I need to work on some mental discipline I think lol. Totally agree about this forum too. We serve as an audience for each other and it gives me tremendous motivation to work on stuff so I can play it for you guys. Once again, awesome job Phil!

I've thought out some cool stuff (at least I thought it was cool), but by time I got to a guitar the idea was completely gone. However, this time I was able to remember because I repeated it over and over again in my head until it sunk in. I have a commute of 1.5 hours one way to work every day, so I have more time than the average person to dwell on this kind of thing. And dwell on it I did. This was the 1st time I've ever been able to remember anything I thought up. I've got a feeling that the more you do this kind of thing the better your memory will get. At least that's my hope.

I think I had enough to drink last night Bruce. Oh wait, that's not what you were talking about. Never mind.

"Tonight the bottle let me down and let your memory come around the one true friend I thought I'd found Tonight the bottle let me down" - I think George Jones said that Bruce
