Well I have been looking for my help on the Internet but not much around. I need to either reduce or remove the drums from a song to make a backing track for my son. He plays drums and wants to make a YouTube video showing his skills, so he has enlisted me to make the video, so I want to use garageband for audio and shoot vid separate. Since I was about to explore shooting vids the timing is good. Anyway if anyone has a clue how to kill the drums I need a suggestion.
thanks, rich

About the only advice I could offer would be to use the EQ to reduce the frequencies that the drums are at, and/or boost the frequencies that everything else is at. You'd have to keep it subtle though or it would probably sound bad. My Sony Vegas Movie Studio came with some vocal remover software but A) I've never used it and B) vocals tend to be in one frequency band while with drums you've got everything from the bass drum to the cymbals, so I doubt that sort of program would be of much help anyway.
Theoretically I suppose you could EQ a track to really increase the sound of the drums, then flip the phase 180 degrees and add that back to the original track which should cancel out the drums, but I wouldn't have the vaguest clue how to actually do that.

Jack you hit on what I have been trying, I am having trouble isolating the frequency tight enough, I also just found out that GB doesn't have an invert function. I might try using audacity. I wonder using the technique you mention would work if I reduced drums mixed then did the same process again. I was really focusing on snare and kick as they stick out the most. I appreciate the input, will give it a try later today.

Update here using the invert method does seem to kill the drums, been playing around with the eq, but can't quite nail a decent medium, anyway this might work for our purpose.
