Hi I'm a relative beginner with no formal music knowledge or training. Currently, I am working on Minior Blues on page 54 of Blues You Can Use. I do not understand the timing in the 5th measure. What does the symbol with the number 4 above what I think are 1/8th notes mean? When I count, I do not get 12 1/8th notes. I'm sure this is dumb question but hope someone can shed some light on this for me. Thank you.

Dave,
That's actually a good question. I think I might be able to explain this. This occurs in measures 2, 6,and 10. The little "4" means that it's a quadruplet.
This study is in 12/8 time, but you still count it as if it were 4/4 time. So, that means there are three 8th notes per beat (12 divided by 4 = 3). In the measure you're talking about there are 13 8th notes not 12. So what the heck is going on? I'll try to explain:
Beat 1 is a quarter note + an 8th note = three 8th notes. Beat 2 is a quarter note + two 16th notes = three 8th notes. Beat 3 is two 16th notes + a quarter note = three 8th notes. Beat 4 a quadruplet made up of four 8th notes, but they are all squeezed into one beat.
I hope that clears it up for you. I'm also learning this stuff, and I know how confusing it can get until someone explains it.

Phil Thank you. That helps - at least it adds up. Now all I have to do is master playing it.

Dave welcome to the group, I was having a lot of issue with timing, so I finally started counting out loud first while listening to the practice track then while playing. Apparently it is helping as my last couple of recordings were actually in time.

Hi
Thanks for the comment. Other folks have suggested that I count as well but I find that difficult, like patting one's head while rubbing the tummy. Clearly I need to work more diligently on that.

Dave,
I have troubles counting and playing as well - I think the full-band recordings in BYCU can become a crutch to lean on where you just learn to play by listening to the demo. Better get used to counting!

It gets easier after you do it a bit, I started counting first without playing the started as I played its starting to become second nature now.
