Hi guys and gals ! I just received my copy of BYCU yesterday and I must say that so far I am very impressed. I have only had time to leaf thru the book and I have the cd playing as I speak. I had planned on just letting the cd play and listen but the first tune ( Texas Rock is it ? ) was just such a good tune that I had to pick my guitar up. I caught onto it quickly and now, already, have a cool new tune to play. A brief history of myself : I am 47 years young and have been " hacking " at guitar for over 30 years. I am completely self taught and, like alot of other guys, have went long periods without playing. Even after 30+ years I would consider myself at only a intermediate level at best. I am committed this year to becoming a better player and that is how I stumbled across BYCU. My plan was to practice and learn something from lots of different genres; blues, rock, chickin' pickin' , funk, etc. I ordered BYCU thinking I could pick up a few licks and tips and go on about my way but I am finding out that it is MUCH more than that. Since finding this forum and hearing the recordings you guys have posted I am very excited about this course and plan on making it the cornerstone of my practice regime. As said, I have only had time to leaf thru but the book looks very well laid out and easy to understand. I am already thinking which books in the series to order next ! I am thinking BRYCU and then on to MBYCU. Dang, it's hard not to get ahead of myself but, like I said, I am excited about the new things I am going to learn and can't wait to get started ! I am going to " officially " start on Monday. I plan on being around the forum here ( when I am nor practicing ) and hope I can contribute something from time to time. Rock on !

Welcome aboard, Phillip! It's great with a new face around here...
Interesting with your guitar-past - sounds very common!
Cheers Joachim

Welcome Philip, it's great to have a new member here! I think my favorite thing about the BYCU books (besides the fact that I LOVE the music) is that it's not just some licks or some solos to learn - it's a comprehensive course covering lead, rhythm, and various aspects of theory. You'll be a pretty well-rounded player by the time you're done. I'm much like you, having played on and off (mostly off) for the last 30 years. I find the people on this forum are a fantastic inspiration to keep me practicing so I don't take one of my 5 year breaks like I always have in the past Anyhow, welcome again and really looking forward to hearing some of your recordings!

Welcome to the forum, Philip. Well, you certainly meet all the prerequisites to be on this forum. It is amazing how so many of us have essentially the same story to tell about our history with the guitar. Spend a little time digging through some of the older posts and you'll see what I mean. What attracted me to BYCU when I picked up the guitar again after a many year lay-off was the studies. BYCU is not just a collection of licks. Each study is a complete piece of music that could easily be expanded, they are melodic and musically interesting, and there is an example of almost every style of Blues. It also introduced me to the jazzier side of Blues which is something I had never really listened to before. Once again, welcome, and I hope you stick around for a while. There is only a small core of regular contributors and it's good to have someone new. I think you'll be very comfortable here. It's a great group of people. BTW, you also have a nice name. Phil

Welcome to the "Blues Brothers" Phillip, looking forward to hearing/seeing your stuff, soundcloud is good but vids are so much better . BTW your vids don't have to feature wildlife and such in spite of what Phil or Bruce might say.

Phillips another welcome, as Phil mentioned you meet the prerequisites of this group I think we all have the same story. I play the texas tune a lot just for kicks and have some variation s of my own. Forewarned have some tough skin if you post, these guys are very thorough when they provide feedback, but that's why we post to help find flaws we need to work on. I have to say this forum and group has really kept me going and improved my playing because of their comments and excellent recordings. I tried video but the camera broke as soon as it focused in on my face .

Thanks for the warm welcome guys ! Seems like a good bunch; albeit it a rowdy one ! I plan on sticking around awhile; I think being here will help keep me focused and my " eye on the prize ". Hope you guys won't mind the questions I am sure I will have in the future. Video will be about the best I can do for now as far as sharing. I have thought about recording equipment the last few years but then always think what other gear I could buy with that dough ! Thanks again for the warm welcome !

Phillips there are several programs you can use that are free that work great for recording I am an apple guy and I use garageband which is free, there are others as well, some of the other guys can chime in my coffee hasn't kicked in so can't remeb the names right now. Anyway you get started recording fairly cheap with the freeware and some cables. Also helps if you do video and a DAW for audio you will better audio. All that said video works we aren't picky around here unless your bending notes flat, or timing isn't on time .

I tried video but the camera broke as soon as it focused in on my face . Sounds like the time I tried singing and all the neighborhood dogs showed up wanting to mate with me

Philip,
If you have questions about recording yourself, ask. You can do it very cheaply. I have a $40.00 Behringer Guitar Link that came with amp modeling software. Go to the 1st page of my progress log, click on any link except the 1st 2 and you can hear how it sounds. The playing and recording may not be good, but the Guitar Link itself can't be beat for the price. Reaper is an excellent high end DAW. You can download a fully functional version for free. Eventually you have to pay $60.00, but it is well worth it. That's $100.00 total. You don't need anything else and I'm sure there are even cheaper ways.
The point is you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good recording.
