I got in about 13 hours on guitar and 4 on bass this week. Worked quite a bit on Funky Soul in the R&B book; I had hoped to get it posted this past week but from listening to my recordings, I think I'll be happier with it if I give it another week's worth of practice Also worked on Tremblin' Tremolo in More BYCU. Think I spent as much time trying to get a good (or at least acceptable) Stevie Ray Vaughan guitar sound as I did actually practicing the song. And I did quite a bit of improvising over backing tracks. On bass I worked on Bass Aerobics and also spent some time practicing the bass line for Tremblin' Tremolo. Kind of a slack week for practicing, but at least I ordered a bunch of guitar and bass books lol.

Still struggling with wrapping up "Glamour Girl" and "Hard Edge Blues" at full tempo. 16th note picking isn't something I've worked on much before, so I hit a wall with these songs. But I think I'll be able to play them at full tempo in the upcoming week. On the rhythm part I am also completely out-gunned by jazzy lessons with lots of different 9th and 13th chord voicings - the next few lessons in BRYCU are going to be difficult for me. But I am having a good time struggling with it

This is the end of the 1st complete week of the new year. I got in 6 days of practice for a total of 6 hrs. This is actual practice time and not time spent with a guitar in my hand. I use a timer to time the segments of practice and only turn it on when I'm practicing something. A few months ago I discovered that I might be sitting there with my guitar for 2 hours and only actually practice for 1 hour. The rest of the time I'm reading something, taking a break, noddling around, checking the forum, etc. I think I made some good progress on "Jumpin Blues." I can play it clean at 90% full tempo and sloppy at 100%. I may have it ready to record by next weekend. The rhythm part is fairly complex and may give me some problems. After listening to the recording I uploaded of "Cheap Runs" I decided that I need to practice it and smooth it out now and not wait. I cringe every time I listen to it. I'm now approaching it as I should have from the start - breaking it into small chunks and PRACTICING IT WITH A METRONOME. I'm finally getting those runs smooth at 60 bpm (the full tempo is 74 bpm). It is very hard for me to get the choppiness out of these runs since they are 6 to 9 notes per beat. Taking it in very small chucks is helping. I'm talking 1 beat chunks here, and trying to land on the the 1st note of the next beat. One of my additional new year's resolutions is to practice with a metronome more often. Since I never used a metronome in the past, any time spent using it will be "more often." I worked a little on an Otis Rush/Jimmy Page lick (and variations of it) that I found on the Gibson Skills House website under Arlen Roth's lessons. I also worked a little on "Hide Away" and a cool slow Blues turnaround from Jody Worell's youtube channel. No major leaps this week. Just slow steady progress.

I've been thinking about doing that too. Every time I listen to my version of it I'm like "Oh God, I actually put that out there for people to listen to?!?!" I think it was mostly because I'd gotten to the point where if I played through it one more time my head was gonna explode. Maybe just keep it in the daily practice schedule and play through it a few times, and as the weeks go by...nah I can't do stuff like that, I'd have to work on it an hour a day lol.

I've been thinking along the same lines - that I need more (any?) dedicated practice time, rather than this being a "multitasking" activity. Well, I did at least play some again this week. I'm thinking that I need to take up Phil's timer idea. You know, they say it's hard to modify a behavior when you don't really know what that behavior is to begin with... A couple of days ago, my wife also asked me why I never make any guitar videos any more. Now that I think about it, I think making the videos sort of forces you to set goals and works towards them. I'm still trying to work on some motivation here. Bruce

Bruce, If you practice in front of the computer, check this out: e.ggtimer.com/ It makes a horrendous beating sound when the time is up. I break my warmup/exercises into 5 segments of 3 minutes each and then the rest of the practice is done in 15 minute segments. We are waiting for more videos from you. Don't let us down. (Motivation through a feeling of guilt. )

Yes Bruce, we're waiting...and waiting... That jazz forum is full of cobwebs, I think there's a family of mice that have taken up residence there too

Well the big news for me this week is I posted Chord-on Bleu and got my foot in the door of MBYCU. I have started to work on Drivin' Blues and pretty much got it all up to slow tempo version but very sloppy as yet, I reckon I've got to be able to play this from memory before I speed it up any more. I have had a look at what the bass part entails and can play the Rhythm at full tempo but needs a bit of tightening up. For the coming week I will continue working on Drivin' Blues of course and I might have a look at an easy version of "Hey Joe" that I have tabs and backing track for if I find some extra practice time. On the non blues side I also have a Troy Stetina rock guitar lesson that's not to far off ready for a video. Keep on posting them vids and soudclouds guys I really enjoy listening to them and it is an enormous motivation for all of us on here.

Well for me I practiced about 5 hours total on more minor blues, been trying to knock out a recording but always have a blatant flaw in one section or another.
Spent several hours just playing around testing my ne tcelectronic delay, and adjusting my pups again. Tested recording using my new USB mic, not sure it will be possible, the mic is so sensitive it picks up my shoe moving while playing. Will have to do more experimentation.
I also learn first 3 parts of Tom Sawyer, and started working on the 3 part, my pocket pod has a Tom Sawyer algorithm so sounds pretty darn good.
Went and saw 1 set of a blues duo female singer male acoustic guitarist, that was excellent too much smoke to stay and listen to set 2 or talk to the guitarist. Tried to video a section to post but video was too dark.
Also spent time practicing SRV rythmn.

I just looked at my practice log regarding "Drivin' Blues." I started it on 1 Sept 2014 and finally got a decent recording on 19 Oct 2014. I spent almost 20 hours of practice time on it. Just thought I'd brighten up your day a little. Hopefully you will be able to get it down in less time. I had a very hard time getting that study up to speed. It's not a particularly fast tune, but there are some very fast fingering changes that drove me crazy trying to play them at tempo. I have to admit that it was time well spent. After not having played it for over 2 months I played it today at full tempo with no problem. I did need to look at the tab, however. I just can't get these studies embedded in my long-term memory.

Is it a uni-directional mic?

That mic has a cardioid pattern, which means it's going to pick up sound from that sides. I seems to me that a uni-directional like a Shure SM-57 (which only picks up sound in the direction it's pointed) would be a better choice for miking an amp. The SM-57 used to be the THE mic for miking amps in concerts, but I'm sure things have changed a little since 1970. However, I'm reasonably certain that you will get better results with a uni-directional mic of some kind to mic an amp.

Yeh but I was really looking more at the quality price factor and USB, my bad not researching a bit more. But I did want something I could track my sons band with so they can listen to themselves practice. Next round will be a mixer and mike set up.

I didn't get in as much time as I would have liked this week but still was alot more time than I had been putting in. I mainly worked on scale exercises and BYCU lesson 1. At first glance I thought lesson 1 would be a piece of cake, it look easy enough on paper; I have ran into a snag though. For some reason, when walking into the b7, I continue to fret that 4th string before catching the open note. I really have to slow down to be able to catch it. It's amazing how rusty I have gotten.

It's amazing how rusty I have gotten. You have found the rust removal specialists. BYCU will definitely remove the rust and polish your playing, but only if you can muster up the self-discipline to persevere when you hit those plateaus where you appear to be not making any progress. When you feel you have this lesson down record yourself whether you choose to upload it here or not. I recommend that you do upload it here, but that is a personal decision. Either way the benefits of recording yourself are too numerous to count. Check out some past posts on this.

Phillip the first recording is a tough one, you think it sounds pretty good then a few months later you listen to it it and go what heck was that, but it gives you a gauge to see how well you are improving. I found the first several songs went pretty easy then at one point got to a point where it was 2 weeks, now seems a little longer. I think I am recing things more now. Anyway can't wait to hear a post from you.
