I got in some good practice time this week - 5 days for a total of 6 3/4 hrs. (I know that's just a warm up for Jack ). It is the end of the month and I did not meet any of my goals for November. My goals were to record "Cheap Runs" and "Blues a la Chord" and start transcribing a Mike Bloomfield lick. I didn't even listen to the Bloomfield lick. I got sidetracked by "Hide Away" and a series of free lessons on Jimmy Rogers from Dave Moore at Old School Blues Guitar (a youtube channel). "Cheap Runs" and "Blues a la Chord are still not ready for prime time, but they are close. My big accomplishment in Nov. was recording my transcription of Magic Sam's version of "Sweet Home Chicago." I spent a little time on Freddie King's "Hide Away" which wasn't planned, but it's a song I've been meaning to learn for a long time. I got motivated to learn it after Jack did the backing track. Compared to what I've encountered in "More Blues You Can Use," it's a pretty simple tune except for one part. So, my primary goals for December are: 1) get "Cheap Runs" and "Blues a la Chord" up to speed and record them. 2) learn and record "Hide Away." 3) get started on "Jumpin Blues." 4) review my favorite past studies in BYCU and MBYCU. That's something I haven't been doing regularly and really need to do.

I got 11 hours on guitar and 9 on bass this week. Still working on True Trem Blues in More BYCU; didn't spend as much time with it as usual, kind of needed a break from it. But I did spend 1 1/2 hours on it. Did quite a bit of improvising along with backing tracks, there are tons of them on YouTube and I've just been having fun with that. I found a blues shuffle guitar solo on YouTube that I've been working on, it's called "Blues guitar lesson - soloing over a shuffle" by Rob Aitken if anybody wants to check it out. Also been working on Ninth Chord Rhythm in A as well as High Nines in D from the Rhythm book for our big online jam session next weekend On bass I worked on the week 12 lesson in Bass Aerobics; I'm kind of at that frustrating point in my bass playing where I'm starting to develop a little bit of technique, but it comes and goes depending on if I'm having a good day or not lol. The Bass Aerobics lesson has some fast parts in it which made me realize it's time to sit down and revamp my fingerpicking; I pick too hard and use big motions with my picking fingers which is slow and inefficient. I also use that "rake" technique where you use the same finger to pick two notes in a row if you're descending down the strings; although many pro's use that it doesn't seem to be for me so I'm working on using alternate picking for everything. Doing lots of spider exercises to drill this stuff into my head. I'm still playing through Hide Away on bass and I've also been working on Fever by Peggy Lee which has a cool bass line to it. Speaking of goals...can we just skip that? Looks like I posted Big Bends way back on October 9th, so I've been working on True Trem Blues for nearly 2 months. And I've been working on it pretty diligently actually. Between the pedal tone part, the fast lick after it, and those double bends at the end, it's taking me forever. I tend to start a lot of projects, get them to the point where they're almost ready to record, but then decide I'm not quite happy with them so I never do get them recorded. I need to stop that and just record them even if they're not perfect. Or spend just a little more time with them before moving on to some other project. That will be my goal going forward. On the good side, I did go hog wild with the Black Friday sale at Musician's Friend Ordered a Fender Rumble 100 watt bass amp, an MXL 910 condenser mic, a little mic stand for it, a 15' Planet Waves guitar cord, 10 sets of Musician's Gear guitar strings, and some copper shielding tape for my Strat - this week's project is to line the inside of the pickup cavity and the back of the pickguard with that stuff to hopefully reduce the amount of single coil hum I'm getting from it.

I've been following my usual routine with some exercises followed by BYCU and BRYCU studies. I've spend quite some time with Hal & Leonoard's T-Bone Walker playalong book - I started with Glamour Girl, which is probably the easiest song in the book, but still really cool...

Well I wasn't very steady this week, practiced a good 3 hours. Spent time on minor scale patterns from the minor blues and started learning the tune.
Spent some time learning a Christmas tune, needs much work.
Took bass guitar apart and can't find problem, so guess I'll end up wiring the thing from scratch.
Took field trip to music store, oredered parts to build my sone a better snare fore his electronic drums. Hopefully works out want to surprise him for Christmas.
Last but not least spent time reading blues rythmns you can use.

I'd like to get around to learning Stairway again one of these days. Gives me a bustle in my hedgerow not to have it in my repertoire

I was sort of using it in place of "getting your panties in a bunch" - what, isn't that what it means?

Now that's a double entendre that I never even picked up on! Thanks for that enlightenment, Tbone. Bruce

Not too much practice last week for me unfortunately, I got side tracked into re-valving/tubing my Marshall as it was developing some rather nasty hum and crackle. I had never attempted to delve into the workings of an amp before so this was rather daunting for me. So quite a bit of time on the internet was spent researching what to do and what tubes to buy etc. So now all done and dusted, very tentatively switched on the power switch last night half expecting a loud crack or at best nothing....but very surprisingly it all worked as it should and with absolutely no hiss or crackle, perhaps even better than when it was new. I have learned that most people change their preamp tubes about every 2 years so mine were 3 years overdue!!!
I have pretty much finished with the material and study for lesson 10 BRYCU, just working at getting the piece sounding more relaxed before I record. Just looked at and listened to lesson 11 ready to start this evening.

I am stuck with lesson 13 at the moment - it's such a hand-buster than I can't play it more than a couple times without cramping up my fretting hand...

I am stuck with lesson 13 at the moment - it's such a hand-buster than I can't play it more than a couple times without cramping up my fretting hand... I'm experiencing the same hand busting time with my finger picking blues lesson, I can only manage 5 to 10 minutes at a time so I tend to do this in between other lessons as a sort of break.
