Had a *GREAT* 2 hours of practice this afternoon. Felt AWESOME about it. This evening I seemed to hit on a nice clean setting on the Amp so went for the recording. Got it on the second take. I'm *REALLY* pleased with this one. Think it might be my best to date. I think it was blackcountrymick who said this was his favourite from BYCU - I hope I did it justice Comments welcome.... soundcloud.com/wannalearnguitar/bycu-preachin-gospel-blues

Yes WPB, nice rendition, the bends were good and the timing over the backing track fitted really well, loved it!! John G commented on my version as sounding a little "country", I thought yours was definitely more bluesy, I can hear what he means though, I think it's all about the execution of the bends, if you drag them out a little then it sort of replicates a pedal steel guitar....sort of..

WPB, That was great. Your phrasing is really good.(I'm finally beginning to understand what's meant by "phrasing" and was waiting for a chance to use the term. ) The bends are spot on to my ear and you even got that walk down in the 2nd to the last bar right on the money. I also like the clean sound. Nice job all around. I can't really offer any constructive criticism. I can't see where it needs any improvement. I don't care what John G. says. When I hear this song I hear country. In fact, all 8-bar Blues sound a little bit country to me. I'm not a big country music fan, but I do like some of it. And this study is one of my favorites. Also, to me WPB's clean sounding guitar makes it sound even more country. I guess it's all a matter of personal interpretation.

WPB,
I don't have much to add, other than "nicely done". I enjoyed listening to that. I always thought that one had a little "country twang" sound to it as well. Doesn't detract from a well-played study, though.

Really, really nice playing there WPB Excellent timing, great bends, very expressive. About the only tiny nitpick I can come up with is that although you've got that laid back feeling going really well, there are a few spots where you get a smidgen ahead of the beat, but it's so insignificant that I might just be imagining it On that really slow free time part at the end I can just about hear you thinking "ahhh...great take"

That sounded excellent takes me back to my childhood southern baptists my dad played bass in a gospel group. They actually cut an album, and I have his bass now just don't know how to play. Great job.

Thanks for all the great comments - they're all much appreciated! WPB, That was great. Could you explain the "phrasing" thing please, I'm not sure I fully understand it. I mean, the phrases were all written by @johng, so they're not mine, right? I'm only imitating the pro. Or have I misunderstood the whole thing?!?

On that really slow free time part at the end I can just about hear you thinking "ahhh...great take" Dude, you don't know how right you are! That's exactly what I said, followed by "I'm glad that was being recorded!"

I mean, the phrases were all written by @johng, so they're not mine, right? I'm only imitating the pro. Or have I misunderstood the whole thing?!? As far as I can determine it's the way one accents notes; the duration of the notes; whether you play a note slightly before, right on, or slightly after the beat. In other words it's how you express yourself. No two people are going to play the same lick exactly the same way. Anyway, that's my interpretation of "phrasing." If anyone can shed some more light on this I'm sure we'd both appreciate it.
