Your up late tonight, Rich. Your tone sounds real good. I like it. But, now it's smack down time. In the 1st full measure you are holding that bend for 3 full counts instead of 2 and come in with the the 1st pair of triplets on beat 4 instead beat 3. So, now you are a whole beat off but somehow you are able to start measure 3 on beat 1. In measure 4 you start on the beat, but again you hold the 1st note too long and are rushing to squeeze in the rest of the notes. Measures 6 and 7 you're right on beat again. Put your guitar down, pull out the book and try to follow along with what you are hearing. Count out loud while you do this. Look at the standard notation and not the tab so you can see the time values of the notes. I really think this will help. I had a big problem playing this one in time in certain parts because the rhythm guitar was throwing me off. It kind of slides in and accents the chord on the upbeat of 1 of each measure. I kept wanting that accent to be on the down beat of 1 and it really made it hard for me to play in time especially in measures 11 and 12. In measure 8 I had a tough time with the last 4 notes before that slide on beat 1 of measure 9. How do I remember all this? I have notes written all over this study. Here's a tip - get a pencil and write out the beats, 1-and-a, 2-and-a, etc. in the space between the tab and the standard notation. I had to do that on several studies and it helped me a lot. Sorry for the smack down, but I do like your tone.

Rich,
I think the tone sounds fine - kind of a nice crying sort of tone, well-suited to those slow bends. You still need some work on timing with that study, though. Keep after it!

That sounded quite nice Rich, only thing is the timing. It sounds like you've got the phrasing down just fine but you're kind of getting lost as far as when to start each phrase. When you practice along with John on the CD, play along with the drums, not the guitar. The drums will always be there, but if you're only paying attention to the guitar, you'll get lost when it's not present on the backing track Your guitar sound is nice, but it just sounds a bit over-processed an inorganic. Is that your Carvin with the high output humbuckers? Those things tend to sound that way. You'll love those Pearly Gates pickups when you get them

You're making lots and lots of progress, Rich, and it's nice to hear more recordings from you - keep up the good work!
I agree with Jack, that you could use less effects, but I know that it's fun to experiment and find a good tone...

Thanks for all the feedback. Timing is on me I have been counting those as three beats, I will go back and give it a shot with the correct timing.
Jack that is my Carvin, to be honest I am not sure why it is sounding processed, i used the effects on the pocket pod for amp emulation only and a little revered. Let's see what happens on round 2.

Thanks for all the feedback. Timing is on me I have been counting those as three beats, I will go back and give it a shot with the correct timing. I've only recently been trying to learn what time time signatures mean and how to count them. In 12/8 time a Half Note = 4 eighth notes. Therefore, a dotted Half Note = 6 eighth notes or 2 beats, because you count 12/8 time as 4 groups of eighth note triplets. That is, each group of eighth note triplets gets 1 beat.

Yeh I used to know that stuff when I played trumpet in High School I was calculating the dot wrong. I have timing down better now but still trying to get a clean recording. Still little rough at the turn around also.

Jack that is my Carvin, to be honest I am not sure why it is sounding processed, i used the effects on the pocket pod for amp emulation only and a little revered. Yeah I think that's just the way those high output humbuckers sound. My Ibanez was the same way, even with a clean sound it seemed heavily compressed or something.

It does sound like there's a touch of chorus in there somewhere to me, not a bad tone though, a bit more crunch and you've got a great classic rock sound. Keep up the good work man.

Thanks I am still messing with the setup I am going to try using the coil tap and record a track as a single coil dry then post process the tone. I have bout worked out the timing now, I had to break down my recording set so my son can study for his college entry test.
