Jack,
If you want to earn the Steve Cropper award I'm afraid this one needs some serious tightening up. At this risk of sounding offensive - this is not up to your usual standards. I'm assuming that you are playing everything on this, which is quite a task and one that I'm not capable of. The rhythm section sounds very good, but it almost sounds like the lead is slightly out of tune. I don't know how many takes you did of this, but always double check your tuning before each re-take.
It also sounds like you are struggling with this tune. I think you might want to get more comfortable with this one before recording again. I don't have the book, but I get the impression that this study is technically much more difficult than it appears to be.

Nice work, Jack. Your opening 6th in the lead part enters a bit early and the single-note part of the rhythm is a tad late. Play along with the CD and listen closely. I think you'll hear what I'm talking about. Otherwise, very strong performance.

Thanks so much guys! You're right Phil, I broke the high E yesterday and forgot to tune it today and it was quite flat. And half the lead is on that string. And thank you so much John! I'll probably re-record this one and try to get both the lead and rhythm parts tightened up (and in tune ).

I've listened to everything you've posted on this forum and I know that your are capable doing a better version of this.

Jack, that really was a very good (with a few flaws) effort. I especially listed to your bass part because there is a lot of "off beat" rhythm in there and if that wasn't solid then nothing else would sound right, I hope when I tackle that one I do it as well as you did mate, great job. If you do intend to have another go at recording have a listen to how John uses different tones and levels to distinguish between the two guitar parts. It is more difficult in my opinion to achieve this with audio only, as a viewer of a video you can see what is actually going on and in a way influences what you actually hear - maybe? .

Thanks guys! I'll definitely re-record this, and at the very least get the lead guitar in tune. I broke the high E the day before and of course the new one had gone way flat by the next day, but being a dunderhead I forgot to check it. How embarrassing Well I guess you guys know why I have so much problem getting my bends to pitch now - I can't even hear if the guitar is in tune lol. I'll try to fix the timing on the single note line in the rhythm too - I imagine I started out doing it right but after playing along with my own backing track for a while, I gradually developed my own more relaxed phrasing for that. And I'll try to tighten up that lead part a bit too. Mick I plan on getting a video camera one of these days, but it seems like I keep spending all my money on guitar related impulse purchases lol.

Jack that was very good had an old 70's rock feel, I am trying to think which band and can't put my finger on BTO maybe. Only critical comment I would make is that I could quite hear the rhythm guitar part seemed like it needed to be a tad louder to mix with the lead a little more. I guess the lead was a little over power, of course this has to do with the recording mix and not the playing. I'll be glad when I get to yours and Phils level.

The new version is way better than the 1st one. A definite improvement. You've earned the Steve Cropper Award for this one. I really like that intro with the "sliding sixes" (I think that's what you call it).

Jack, that was very impressive and sounded great through headphones. I'm so hoping I find the time to start this book this week, after AFB off course.

Thanks guys! Rich, I originally had the rhythm part louder but the problem was, with the lead and rhythm parts playing similar melodies in a similar spot on the fretboard, it's hard to distinguish between the two; notes from the lead would sound like they're part of the rhythm. So that's why I made the lead part so much louder - so you could tell which part was which. Mick - yeah I love the songs in this book, I'm sure you will too. It's a great change of pace from the blues stuff. Phil - I even checked that my guitar was in tune this time - just like the pro's do

Jack,
A tip of the hat to you. That one sounded really good. Nicely done all around.
