Weekly status update time I've mostly been working on Blues A La Chord in MBYCU. It's got several chords in it that I've never played before and you have to nail them all instantly. Expect my finished version sometime around December LOL. The rhythm part is a spread thing that's gonna take some time to get tight with as well. Also working on Sweet Soul Song in the R&B book. It's a fun one with lots of 6ths in the lead part. And playing Funky Blues in the Rhythm book a bit as well. I'd like to record a solo for that, but that usually takes me forever Doing some improvising along with backing tracks too. I'm kind of happy with how I'm progressing with that. So what have you guys been working on? Inquiring minds want to know

I'm getting close to finishing "All Forms". I'm smoothing out those last free-time measures and working on a couple of other difficult measures. I also got into "More Blues You Can Use" today. Working on the 1st study and it doesn't look too overwhelming. Got through the rhythm part without much trouble. I tried it back in Oct when I was still deeply in the "gotta-learn-everything-right-now" mode. I remember having a hard time with the rhythm and quickly giving up on the lead. It's amazing what happens when you do this stuff in some kind of progressive order. Jack, did you ever record "Drivin' Blues"? I'm very concerned that you don't skip any studies. That would set a very bad precedent. Phil

Thanks for the concern Phil, I think you might be more concerned with catching up and passing me LOL Drivin' Blues is here: soundcloud.com/jack-c8/drivin-blues I was disappointed with that recording at the time - I suppose when you practice something every day all you hear is the mistakes - but listening back to it now I'm actually pretty proud of it. If this book gets progressively harder like BYCU, by the end of it I think we'll be up to stuff that even Stevie Ray Vaughan couldn't play lol.

I even commented on it. Must be old age setting in. It's funny, but when I listen back to some of my stuff it doesn't sound as bad as I thought it did when I posted it (with some exceptions of course). I've listened to the MBYCU studies many many times and some some of them sound like they might be hellacious to play. There's one with a long tremelo chord progression. Hopefully, my ability will improve before I get to those.

That long tremolo chord progression is the one I'm working on right now lol. I hope to post my version of it right around the time Bruce finishes Jazzin' The Blues

Back from the holidays and about to start work on "Minor Blues". Hope I can nail the feel of this one - love the way it sounds on the recording!

I picked up All Form Blues last night and have been having a good look through John's other books to try to decide how to tackle my post grad work . When I get AFB under my fingers I will probably start MBYCU (hangin' on to Phil's coat tails ), that appears to be that every lesson has 3 sections to work on at the same time so there is plenty to keep anyone occupied (except maybe Jack ). If I need any supplementary material there is always the theory from BYCU and the Rhythm book which should give me the grounding for R&B and Jazzin but that's another lifetime away yet. According to my computer log it's been nearly 4 years since I first started BYCU, must be some sort of record!!! EDIT: In addition to the work set out in the books Jack's one man band backing tracks has raised the bar somewhat, looks like getting my bass out!!

Nothing new to report on my front - too much work, life, etc. I've got a really hectic schedule the next couple of months, unfortunately. Been working on All Forms, Rockin' and Rollin', Hard Rocker, rhythm part for "Mary Had A Little Lamb" by Buddy Guy, have looked at first study from MBYCU, and of course, the rest of Jazzin' the Blues... I think maybe I'm spreading myself too thin, but I'm enjoying it all. Getting video recordings done also takes time I just haven't found lately...
