Play E 1st string 5th fret note (A). Now fret & play 2 frets up (B) & listen to its pitch here & mentally think it!.Now bend (E) 1st string 5th fret up...whilst still thinking/humming the higher pitch note (B) & Match the "Beat".its pitch with the bent string .Now immediately Fret the higher pitched note.Don't allow the bent string to slowly release.Bend up & nail the required pitch,& then fret the fretted note that is 2 frets higher & Compare. Both notes..the bent & the fretted note should match. That's the musical goal.
Try to play the bent note SLOWLY & listen to the pitch "rise".As soon as you reach the pitched note (the goal note) aimed for that's sustained in your head Stop the bend.
If you try from the onset,to bend to the desired pitch "instantly"...you will under/over bend the string etc.The exercise here is accuracy.,not speed!
Soon, with practice ,one should be able to bend the string slowly but with control & accurately to the higher pitch (Goal note).
Only by repetition can you learn this.Boring, tedious yet there is no short cut."Empty head=Empty music!"hence Think the goal note aimed for!)And bend the string to it.The note in your head is used as a reference...The note you aim for.
Try different bent notes & fretted pitch to aim for etc...1 fret up(#) 2 frets,3 frets etc...
Try silent Bending to the "Goal" note(Ghost bending)...Nail the goal note First... then release it.& Compare it to its fretted version.A good exercise for the Ears here.Learning to accurately Bend strings to any pitch..is Ear training.Training the ear to recognize pitch.
Obviously for some Lighter gauge strings are beneficial here.Problematic for some with weak finger strength & med/heavier guage strings if used.,unless you have strong fret fingers.Every player is Unique. Fret finger strength is too!One must find the string gauge to suit the fret fingers.,there "strengths" & "weaknesses" known and catered for!Why "Fight" the strings.Find the string gauge(Tension) that suits "your" fret fingers.
Applies to chord formation & solo playing equally!
A lower action(string height) can help some players here.Lighter string guage too maybe.A lighter "Touch" by the fret fingers must be acquired too.
For others a medium/high action & med/heavy strings may be the preference here,to suit the player with the stronger fret fingers!-One must tailor the strings to suit your uniqueness.Your finger strength. To suit your preferences.& your playing style. The "Attack". The plectrum or finger style hand does affect the string height used.,& in combination with the preference for the string height & fret finger strength to attain the final gtr set up used.Bending strings is now made physically easier to execute.
