Setting the Intonation:
Should only be done with new strings, that have been stretched "In" = Now Stable & bright.
Many use the Open harmonic note at the 12th fret "V" the same string now fretted (12 th) fret note.(by Ear).Others simply rely upon using a Tuner alone (digital & all ways near perfect)as a visible guide too.
Try this method.:EG:-The fretted note is sharp...compared to the "open" note.= Pure. De tune the string a fraction...Then,adjust the saddle screw to sharpen the string. Now Tune the string to its correct pitch & now "compare".This approach might be easier for many,to set the intonation.
One can also Fret the note 5 frets UP & compare the fretted note on the next string-They should MATCH the "beat"
Tuning the strings relying purely upon the Digital tuner alone, which is a Visual aid,can lead to further frustration.,& be imprecise.
One cannot set the intonation with aged strings!Or not fully stretched "in" strings. If changing string gauge...re set the intonation.,if need be.
Tuning:
Tune the 6th string FIRST! then use the 55545 method to tune remaining strings "In"
6th string (E) at 5th fret gives the required 5th strings pitch (A) etc etc. Allow the Ears to steer here. With practice it becomes 2nd nature. The more you do it the easier it becomes etc.& no batteries required. The Ear soon learns to recognizes pitch./matching the "beat"
Purchase Pitch Pipes. They don't require batteries! & learn to use just the right amount of "pressure" to sound the pitch.,the note.(its an instrument too!)
Now use the 6th string pipe note,to tune the 6th string. From there on,use the 55545 method for remaining strings.
Yes,one can still use the digital tuner, but its all ways "perfect,..too perfect. Thus older strings & using the EAR to fine tune them is more reliable. The Pitch pipes(Cheap) can be relied upon too,so don't dismiss them.Learn to use the Ears. All ways check the strings are at correct pitch & keep them there!Soon with practice & constant application(55545)...tuning up on the fly becomes "instinctive" & quick to do.Especially when testing out gtrs in shops.Just a fine tweek may be all that is required to tune here.
