Record a simple 12 bar EG: A7 D7 E7.Use Down strokes only for the Clarity.Tempo...as Slow as possible/.Recording length 3 mins.(you'll be glad of this slow tempo later!)
Draw A4 paper.A min pentatonic scale Box position 5th fret.Big DIAG/PTRN 1 -This enables you to glance & assess later,as you then play!(multitasking!)& listen to the recorded playback as a guide etc.
Blues uses 1,1V,V configuration.Mark ALL the root notes for A,D.E on Diag. There positions.
Mark on Diag ..(1) beneath A root note & (1V) D root Note & (V) E root note. This tells you were the chord changes occur!as/When.
Starting with A Root note 6th string,5th fret...Against the A7 chord- A perfect note to END a lick. & MEMORIZE it.its musical "affect".
Just use 3 note length phrases here...= You are focusing upon the note landed upon, its musical affect against the (3) chords, as/when they occur etc.& Mark Diag accordingly etc.Ask yourself does this scale note fit the chord,if not which chord.. does it fit? then mark diag accordingly etc.Do this application for all the scale notes in the Pattern!
You will end up with a musical sat Nav!Predictable yes,but you then learn which notes to deliberately OMIT,or use on passing...as "links" to another phrase etc.
Extend the length of the lick etc...& deliberately Target the scale notes as/when.Your licks can then be steered accordingly. You will have a musical direction.
Even wrong notes landed upon...can be as if "deliberate" & then steered(Corrected) via Bends etc.) to a correct chosen scale note .you will learn & know your musical position at any point in the chord progression at any time.
With familiarity..extend the length of your phrases etc..Sustain notes etc,add vibrato, trills, hammer ons, pull offs,,,& increase your finger speed with confidence.& use the Target scale notes /musical "affect".
Apply same Diag application & 1,!V,V beneath the scale notes etc etc..to remaining box patterns-Opens up the whole fret board.
Eliminate guesswork & learn to "improvise" on the fly.
The next step is to apply the musical affect to just 1 chord in isolation!....All the scale notes over the 1 chord & memorize there "affect"..(Mood created). Then apply it to the 1V chord & memorize,,finally the "V" chord & memorize.
