Third song out of More Blues You Can Use. It's 4 BPM slower than the full tempo version, but this is a decent take for me and I guess I've gotten to the point where I think my time would be better spent moving onto the next song instead of continuing to work on this one. soundcloud.com/jack-c8/cheap-runs

Phrasing: Allow your solo to "Breathe"=Add Pauses. Think in a vocal way.(When you talk, you don't speak non stop=You pause too etc.)Apply the same when soloing Dynamics: Learn to add "Dynamics"=Loud & Soft notes ...(A drummer + Bassist adds Dynamics etc ) using Dynamics & Phrasing helps to create an interesting solo!& helps the solo melodically.Creates MOOD.

Thanks for the input Tuch, it's a solo out of the book so I just played it as written (or as close as I could LOL). I guess something like this would normally be used as the second or third chorus of a song, as a climax, which is why its phrasing is so active. I'd love to be able to add more controlled dynamics to my playing, but this song is basically beyond my ability to even play it in the first place, so nuances like dynamics are just kind of beyond me with this one. It is something I'll definitely work on with future songs though, thanks!

Nice recording, Jack! 4PBMs - that a slippery slope...

Jack, Nice playing on that. That's a tough one, but you need to stop dicking around and play it at full tempo. None of this 4bpm less stuff. As soon as I get "Delta Child" and "All Forms" nailed I'll be right on your tail with "More BYCU". MR. Tuch, Welcome to the forum. It's always a good idea to lurk a bit in order to get a feel for any forum. All of the active participants here are working on one or more of John Ganapes' books and we upload our recordings to show how we are progressing. It's also good to "breathe" a little between an initial barrage of posts on a forum that you are new to. I know that this forum doesn't have a formal "introduce yourself" section, but I think we'd all like to hear what you are interested in and what experience you have in playing Blues. Phil

Jack,
I thought that was pretty cool - and that's no bull! Perfect, no - couple of flat bends, a little slow at times (even in your "slowed down" version), but overall, I think the rest of us are consumed with raging jealousy because we can't come anywhere close to this. No, you wouldn't play an entire solo like this, but it's a vehicle to learn some of those fast, "cheap" runs that you hear thrown in all over the place in the blues. Good job, as always. Thanks for sharing. Hopefully, I'll be part of the herd on your heels, as well!

Thanks Bruce! That's a really cool song and I think the runs you learn in it are easy to apply to your own improvising, so it's a great one Really hard too lol. I started on the next song, Blues A La Chord, and I'm determined this one is going to have good bends Looking forward to you and everybody else getting into More Blues You Can Use. But the Jazz board's been so deserted lately! I'll have to post something over there one of these days.

Yeh I started some serious bend practice this morning, using the tuner to check my pitch.

Yeah, Jack, I realize I've kind of abandoned the jazz board - been really busy with work, life, trip to UGA, Delta Child, etc, etc. I WILL GET BACK TO IT!

Same here, between working on a song in MBYCU, one from the R&B book, and fiddling around a bit with one from the Rhythm book, the Jazz stuff just never seems to make it onto the practice schedule. And I have so much fun putting that swing feel on those lead lines. Oh well, it's always nice to have it there if you get tired of working on the other stuff and need a change of pace.

Nice playing jack. I can hear that you get the feel. It kind of got away from you at the end, but otherwise I liked it. Great tone.

Thanks so much John! Yeah that song pushed my technique to its limits - and beyond I'll keep working hard on improving and come back to that song later and see if I can get the end part smoothed out - all those bends mixed in with the fast single-note lines are quite a challenge Thanks again!
