I downloaded Lepou modeling software which is free and gets good ratings on the Internet. I'm still fiddling with it. It pretty complicated for me. Here are some screen shots. Marshall Head Impulse Response Loader for Speaker Cabinets

Here are shots of the microphone selections and the various placement options. It's pretty intimidating.

I admire you for attempting something that is "pretty intimidating." The simpler, the better, for me.

Looks nice Phil, I'll have to check that out too. Just start pushing all the buttons and turning all the knobs, you'll eventually figure out what they all do

Jack, I've been pushing all the buttons and turning all the knobs all afternoon. Tommy, I had to check this stuff out. It's free!!! I'm sure one could get some terrific sounds from LePou, but it has a very steep learning curve. I agree that simpler is better. I still like my Native Instruments AC Combo Box it has lot's of presets and is very easy to use.

I get the impression that in modeling software, as in DAW software, the "best" one to use is the one that you are familiar with and know how to operate. You can probably make good soundings recordings on just about any of them - you just need to select one, stick with it, and learn how to use it's features.

I just did a search for you tube videos on using lepou saw one for setting it up for reaper, lot of steps involved getting it setup. Seems to be a lot of different available amp models though, and gets good comments on some of the guitar sites.

Hi,
I am using Lepou's through Reaper. It was quite easy to "install". You can have either or both of Amp modeling and Cabinet. I did not play a lot with the settings but I can have something working very quickly.
Phil, were you able to find your way?

Hi, I am using Lepou's through Reaper. It was quite easy to "install". You can have either or both of Amp modeling and Cabinet. I did not play a lot with the settings but I can have something working very quickly. Phil, were you able to find your way? Big Fab Big Fab, Yes, I figured out that LePou's models are just .dll files that need a host program like Reaper to function. It's not a stand alone program. I also discovered that LeCab is an Impulse Response (IR) loader and you need to find the necessary cab/mic IR's to plug in to it. I learned the concept of and the importance of an fx chain. I learned a whole bunch of stuff. It is not overly difficult to learn the basics of this, but I'm sure it would be quite time consuming to get good at it. I'm also sure you can get some very high quality tones with it. I'll play with it from time to time, but I'll stick with my Native Instrument (NI) software for everyday use. Playing around with this more elaborate stuff interferes with my practice time, and I need all the practice I can get. One of the nice things about the NI program that came bundled with my Guitar Link is that you can import a backing track into it and it has a slow down dial. So you can play along with a BT and find a decent tone with one simple to use program. For someone who wants to learn and experiment with this stuff LePou is a great place to start and it's free.
