That sounded great, Jack! What did you think was off?

Jack,
I think you're doing pretty good with this one - there's a couple of those syncopated rhythm strikes that are a little off, but not too far off. You got a good jazz kind of tone on it, too. Was that a Pod Farm preset? Was it same tone on both parts? I found the rhythm "feel" easier to do using "down, (up), (down), up" skipping the parenthesized beats. Did you play this way, or with all downstrokes? I think you're going to master the Jazzin' The Blues book before I ever get another video made, too!

Thanks guys! Tommy, I have a hard time feeling the beat for the second chord in each bar (which I believe is beat #3), and the timing is a little off with those. I mean, sometimes I hit it right but other times it's just off and clashes with the lead part. That swing feel takes some getting used to.
Bruce, thanks for the tip on the strumming, I'll definitely have to give that a try. I've been doing it with all downstrokes. I made my own Pod Farm sounds for those, the rhythm part is the Line 6 Piezacoustic amp with a noise gate. I use the neck/middle pickup on my Strat with the tone way down around 1 or 2. The lead part is the Jazz Clean amp with a noise gate, a healthy dose of slap plate reverb and a compressor. I use the neck pickup with a bit more tone (I just fiddle around with it while I'm playing until I'm happy with it).

Jack,
Thanks for the info on your tones. I often do the same with Pod Farm - play around until I find something I like, but then never write down what it was! You can, if you haven't found out yet, save tones in Pod Farm, and I should probably make it a habit to do so - they'll be mixed in with all the other tones, so you'd probably need to start some naming convention to be able to find them - maybe something like "JTB - Cool Shade" or "BYCU Delta Child" or such.
I thought you might be playing with all downstrokes. There's nothing wrong with that, I've just found that for me the "down up" strumming in a swing rhythm works best. I think parts where you play all the triplet strums in a swing are best played with all downstrokes usually - think of the rhythm part to "I Put A Spell On You" (either Creedence or Screemin' Jay Hawkins). I think if you played "Cool Shade" with all downstrokes, you'd do best to get your right hand going in a triplet rhythm, and learn to hit the right beats:
TRIP-(a)-(let), (trip)-(a)- LET, (trip)-(a)-(let), (trip)-(a)-(let)
where you're striking on the capitalized beats in a 12/8 bar. Anybody else have an opinion about playing this kind of rhythm? You can see my videos to see a demo of how I've gotten in the habit of playing this.

TRIP-(a)-(let), (trip)-(a)- LET, (trip)-(a)-(let), (trip)-(a)-(let) Ah that's exactly what I needed! Thanks! Not being familiar with jazz, my natural inclination was to hit the second chord on the first "trip" of the third triplet, but playing along with the CD of course I notice that's not right (but couldn't figure out what was right), and was just kind of estimating where to play it, which made it seem like it was hanging out in the middle of nowhere. But it's the "let" of the second group of triplets - I'll have to count / strum that out while I'm playing today and I think things will start falling into place An yeah with Pod Farm I just name all my sounds starting with an "A1" so it sticks them all in one bunch. Like "A1 - jazz lead" and "A1 - jazz rhythm" etc. I think I'll have to start getting more specific and breaking it down into several groups as the A1 list is getting awfully long already.
