As a thank you to John, I uploaded my efforts on my most recent piece. When I first got the book, this was one of the pieces I really wanted to be able to play. soundcloud.com/wannalearnguitar/bycu-bends-slides-and-shiftsI paid for the backing tracks and recorded myself last night. Comments / suggestions on my playing welcome.

That sounded really nice Wannaplayblues! Well played and it had a really nice relaxed feel to it. Timing was very good and I like your guitar sound a lot too.
And welcome to the board - it's great to have more people contributing and posting their songs here!
About my only constructive criticism has to do with the recording and not your playing - it sounds like you've got the input level on your guitar turned up too high in your recording software, which creates a bit of distortion. Whatever recording software you're using, there's usually some sort of meter showing the input level from your instrument - just adjust it so that it stays in the green.

Very nice, Wannaplay. You may have to change your name to "NowI'mPlayin'Blues"! Don't know how you're recording, but ditto what Jack said about some distortion occurring with some of the peaks. Oh, and definitely, welcome to the forum. Thanks for sharing with us.

Sounds really good. I'd be very happy if one of my students came to a lesson with a performance like that. Keep it up - you're on track.

I am blown away by all the positive replies, especially reading such encouraging words from John G. I have never felt confident with my playing, and whenever I play it back it always sounds awful to me. Is this a common thing? Thanks for all the welcomes to the forum. I'm glad I joined and look forward to being part of the community here jack1982 and bluesbruce With regard to recording - I was using a cheap mp3 voice recorder placed in front of my AMP, which would explain the poor quality. I'm thinking perhaps I can take the headphone out and connect it to the line-in on the PC and perhaps record this way?!? Any suggestions? jack1982you said you liked my "guitar sound a lot too" - that really surprised me, thanks *so* much. I'm still trying to find my "voice" sound wise and think it's never quite what I want it to be. Here's my setup for the recording: Mexican Fender Strat set to neck pickup Amp : VOX VT40+ set to emulate "US 2x12", with gain at 50% and mids set higher than bass and trebble spring reverb enabled on the amp and set to about 50%

Hi Wannaplayblues, to record I use a Behringer Guitar Link and GarageBand. The Behringer unit comes with some modeling software, but my Mac already had GarageBand so I didn't do anything with the software from Behringer. Many of the other forum members record differently and will no doubt be able to help you figure out how to record. I had not tried amp modeling software before, but I find that it's kind of fun to experiment and discover a tone, or tones, that you like.

Wannaplayblues, I'm pretty new to this whole recording on the PC thing myself but trying to plug your headphone output on your amp into your computer sounds like it would be worth a shot. You could download some recording software like Audacity (which is free) or Reaper (which is free for 60 days) to record the signal. If you've never recorded on your PC before I guess I'd suggest starting with Audacity as it's much simpler, but once you get more experienced with this stuff Reaper can do a whole lot more.
Personally I use the Pod Studio UX1, which is just a black box that you plug your guitar into, and it's got a USB cable coming out the back that you plug into your PC. It comes with their Pod Farm software which has a whole bunch of amp sim's and effects. All the recordings I've posted on these forums are made using that, if you want to hear what it sounds like.

Ok, with everyone's help and suggestions I did a new recording and tried to keep things out of the red. I took the headphone jack from my AMP and went direct to my PC's line-in. As I use Linux, I used "Jack" audio controller and recorded everything with Ardour3 as there was less latency than Audacity (on my system at least). I think the output sounds pretty good (I turned the gain up a little for a dirtier sound, which I prefer). soundcloud.com/wannalearnguitar/bends-slides-and-shiftsComments still very much welcome and appreciated.

Thanks guys, it means a lot to hear your support and comments.
Loving listening to everyone's recordings and their individuality being heard in the playing of the same songs.
I know we're all on a journey of discovering our "voice" in our Blues playing - but the support here has blown me away! Is this support normal of guitarists in general - or is it more of a Blues scene thing?

Excuse me? It's a widely known and scientifically proven fact that the Guitar player as such is the most selfless and caring specimen among those of the species of musicians. We just try not to contradict Except when it comes to critiquing bends. We give no quarter when bends are not to pitch.

Bends are non-negotiable. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.
