Jack,
Man, I feel like I'm just raggin' on you. Please feel free to tell me to lay off and I promise I'll shut up...
This one on the CD sounds like it is played in a straight rhythm, and you've played it with a swing rhythm. Again, you're getting all the notes, tone sounds great. And, man, I really wish I could knock all these out at the rate you are doing it... maybe it's all just productivity envy! I've certainly been on a dry spell as far as posting anything. Yeah, it's much easier just to sit back and critique what other people are doing...
Okay, I want you to go back and listen to the CD and try to count it 1-2-3, 2-2-3, 3-2-3, 4-2-3... (triplet rhythm), and then try to count it straight 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. Tell me which of these rhythms fits the recording.
Really, Jack, I'm NOT trying to come down on you. If anyone else has this book, I'd ask you to do the same. Maybe I'm the one who's off base here - I'll be happy to admit it (I'll blame it on Sky vodka).

Yeah I don't know, maybe it's that drum rhythm I used that just sort of adds a bit of a swing feel to it. I'm pretty sure the drum part is in straight time (the "swing" setting on my drum machine is at no swing at all) but the beat sort of swings anyway and maybe I picked up on that when I was playing the guitar parts and just went with it. It's definitely not the best drum rhythm for that track - I'll go back and find a better one and re-record it today. Thanks for the input, and don't worry about ragging on me LOL. There are some things I just don't hear or aren't aware of when I play stuff and it's good you point them out to me To me it's like I'm adding "feeling" to it, but actually I guess I'm playing it in the wrong rhythm. This is all stuff I need to learn. Oh and I'm gonna rag on you some too - get your butt in gear and post some recordings Bruce!

Sounded pretty good to me, I listened to it twice and timing wise it sounded like you were playing with the drums. I am not sure what the book calls for lesson wise, but being this is blues you should be able to adjust the rhythms into the feel you want. IMHO, don't mean your suppose to play it in straight time for the lesson thought.

You've got a great sound going on there Jack, I can't really comment on the way it should be played (swing or straight) as I do not have the book, but on the strength of you demoing this I have just ordered it

Thanks guys! Yeah I actually did a second version of it with more of a straightforward 4/4 drum rhythm: soundcloud.com/jack-c8/easy-rhythm-take-2I don't know if that's right or if I put da swingz on it again I've been trying to learn a bit more about triplet feel and/or swing feel. But I'm still confused lol. I guess triplet feel (12/8 time) can be played as 4 groups of 3 notes per bar, each with the same time value, and swing feel means shortening some notes and lengthening others? But then other stuff I read says that triplet feel is shortening and lengthening notes too. Oh well, I'll continue blundering forward as best I can Mick I hope you like the R&B book, I absolutely love it. Lots of what I'd call early rock and roll style stuff in there, what you might hear at a sock hop in the '50s, and then there's some funk style stuff and other songs I can only describe as absolutely beautiful.

...I've absolutely no idea what a sock hop is but I'm sure the songs are a lot of fun to learn and play.

Jack, I liked both of your versions, but noticed a difference in the feel of the second recording. Not sure if that makes sense to anyone but me. You now have me thinking I may want to get the Rhythm and Blues YCU book.

Tommy, that's pretty much what I hear too - a vaguely different feel between the two versions, which I can't really put my finger on at all other than that the drums in the first version have a syncopated feel while in the second they don't.

Jack,
I think the second version is more true to the way it's played in the book/CD. You're playing on that is great - nice tone, excellent timing. Whether to play a song straight or swing, of course, is at the discretion of the artist, but if you hear a song played swing that you're accustomed to hearing straight (or vice versa) it just sounds "wrong".
I've got this book, and while I haven't played any of it yet, I have listened to the CD. I also give it a hearty endorsement for some cool sounding stuff, but I chose to pursue the Jazzin' the Blues first. If I ever get back on track and finish JTB, I might take on some videos of this book next. At the pace I'm going lately, this may be approximately in the year 2525...

Bruce,
In the year 2525, if man is still alive, if woman can survive, I will be an old man. So you need to finish sooner.
Plus, I would like to hear/see your videos on the R&BYCU lessons.

Thanks Bruce, I just love that song. If you're not going to get to this book until 2525, I'll be...let's see 9 + 5 and carry the 1...well pretty old at any rate. So if you could step up that schedule a wee bit I'd appreciate it
