Well, I got BRYCU Funky Blues learnt and recorded (see other thread for that). Tried out a new pedal that I now love - NUX 6ixty5ive, just youtube the reviews, everyone seems to really like them and they're dirt cheap!
Working through BYCU Rockin And Rollin - I have it memorisd, but working on getting it smooth for recording, it's actually quite fast!
I added some music reading to my efforts this week, 15mins a day from Mel Bay's "Modern Guitar Method Grade 1". I think it#s working, I can play "Twinkle twinkle little star" in 1st position key of C. I may never be awesome at it - bur I hope I won't be held back one day simply 'cos I couldn't read a bit of music!
So, mire BRYCU and hope to get BYCU Rockin And Rollin done this week!

I didn't get as much playing time this last week but I am reviewing and working on "Ninth Chord Rhythm in A", not ready to sign off yet. Away from the blues I've been dabbling with "Paranoid". Feels great just rocking out

I'm still working on memorizing the guitar part for "Going to California." I can actually remember it all, but remembering it instantly as I'm playing it...that's gonna take some time Haven't been playing the mandolin enough lately, I'll try to increase that a bit this week. Not really planning on recording this song until next month so I guess I've got plenty of time.

Glad to hear you guys are still at it. I remain on "injured reserve" - there is just something about specifically the picking motion that is just really aggravating my wrist. On the plus side, I got to see The Eagles "The Long Goodbye" concert with Steely Dan since I've last checked in here. Absolutely fantastic show. Really made me wish I could to learn to play "Bhodisattva", or alternately, to be re-incarnated as Joe Walsh, who is the absolute embodiment of rock and roll!

Sorry to hear about the injury Bruce, I guess all you can do is rest and wait. That Eagles / Steely Dan concert must have been awesome, I love both those bands but have never seen either of them.

Thanks, Jack. I'm pretty sure the wrist/base of thumb soreness relates to some arthritis and tendonitis, which stems from my bad habit of gripping the plectrum too tightly. Unfortunately, old habits die hard... Fortunately, golfing does not seem to bother it, so I've been doing more of that, and less music. I think I'm going to try some finger style playing, see how that goes. Probably should also look into some stretching exercises, too.
The Eagles and Steely Dan, two great bands, for sure. Both were primarily really two-man corroborations, now down to Donald Fagan and Don Henley. I have seen The Eagles twice before, but had never seen Steely Dan. SD was really just Fagen and Walter Becker and a bunch of studio musicians making some really killer records after about the first two or three albums. They did start off as an actual touring band - check out some of their "Midnight Special" appearances on Youtube from the early 70's. They had Skunk Baxter and Denny Diaz on guitar, Becker on bass, Fagen on Keys, and they actually had another lead singer (though Fagen still sang lead on a lot of their songs). Both these bands certainly went through some changes over time, but kept putting out some really good records. The band Fagen is touring with now is really top notch, and they do a great job playing some of Steely Dan's rather complex tunes live. Great show if you have the chance to see them. Google tells me that Fagen and Henley are both 76 years old now. Don't know how long they will continue to tour.

Fingerpicking is taking me a while to get back into (it's all I'm dong with "Going to California). I suppose the right half of my brain is used to memorizing stuff for my left hand to do, and the pick just plays whatever note I'm fingering with my left hand. But with fingerpicking I have to memorize all these picking patterns and change from one to the other instantly...the left half of my brain says "Memorizing? We don't do that stuff over here." I remember even back in my "cool" high school days when I was into metal etc. but I still loved the Eagles. Such nice relaxed songs and done with so much style and feeling. And Steely Dan has some of the coolest songs ever.
