Hey guys. Am I the only one around any more? Haha
Nothing new or different in my routine--just my standard Minnesota one. Playing every day, some days more, some days less. I still learn and improve very slowly, een working on the same set of stuff all summer.Fortunately I enjoy the time I spend with the guitar so I keep at it.

Gramps, I think everybody was waiting to see who would blink first.
I haven't touched a guitar in almost 2 weeks due to the golfer's elbow thing. I'll think I'll start back up tomorrow and see how things feel as the problem is still there. Any kind of tendon problem takes forever to resolve.
I watched Rick Beato's interview with Kirk Hammet of Metallica yesterday. As always Rick's interview was outstanding. IMO nobody, but nobody, interviews musicians better than Beato. His depth of knowledge about the music of the person being interviewed is mind boggling. He asks questions nobody else asks and he doesn't interrupt.
I was in my late 30s when I first heard Metallica so they were not one of the bands that had an influence on me as a teenager. I heard them thru my own kids who were in their early teenage years. However, when I first heard "Master of Puppets" I was blown away and became a fan.

I am also doing the same things, working on easy jazz songs. I mentioned some YT lessons by Jared awhile ago, which appealed to me, but the full lessons were rather expensive. Searching for alternatives I came across "The Complete Jazz Guitar Method" by Jody Fisher, which seems to include the same material (and many of the same practice tips), and I planned to jump right into the chord melody book, but that quickly got a little too difficult for me, so right now I am working on the earlier books in the series. I will see where that takes me. A couple of weeks practice should take me to some jazz standards comping examples, which is more interesting and applicable to my band setting.

I'm still working on "Lay it Down" by Ratt. I think I've finally got the main riff to the point where it's acceptable. It's hard as hell to play, you're holding down a 5th string root barre chord with your index and 3rd fingers, then doing pulloffs to the chord with your pinky, then there's a big stretch - 5th fret A with your index finger, 8th fret D with your 3rd finger and 10th fret G with your pinky. And you're constantly alternating between the palm muted open low string and this other stuff on the higher strings. The way Warren DiMartini plays it, it's all perfectly clean and precise. And pretty darned fast lol. I'm still puzzling over how he gets his guitar sound - as always I've made about 10 presets to try to duplicate it and they all suck I started recording over the weekend, I've still got a week before the next "fixits" session so I'm hoping that will be enough time, though I'll need a year to get a guitar sound I'm happy with lol. Phil, I hope your elbow is getting better. It's frustrating with how long that sort of stuff takes to heal up. I was also blown away when I first heard "Master of Puppets." I think Tina does about as good a cover as is humanly possible. Look at that picking technique, holy Christmas. Looks like one of those robotic machines placing electronics components on a circuit board faster than the eye can see

Well, damn! I didn't realize we had totally skipped last week. Our troops have grown pretty thin again on the forum. Haven't heard from WPB or Mick for a while, and Jack is the only one who has posted some actual playing in a long time. I've just been busy with a bunch of other stuff again, and don't think I even picked up the guitar all week, though I did break 100 in golf! Unfortunately, this resulted in really flaring up my plantar fasciitis. I think I'm going to need to stay off my foot for a few weeks, so hopefully can spend a little more time playing the guitar... Do you guys want to disband the forum? We've kept it going for so long, I would kind of be saddened to see it go. I think it was George Harrison who said: "All Things Must Pass" when his group fell apart! I guess maybe I personally need to think about where my forum participation is fitting into my life, and try to be a more active participant.

Many times I've thought that the forum was dead and that I should just stop posting and even stop checking it. However, after almost 10 years of being a member I can't bring myself to stop (and I've tried). I feel like I know you guys and have to stay in contact from time to time. That may come to an end sometime in the future but not yet. Some members disappear for weeks or months and eventually show up again and update us on what they've been doing. It's like hearing from a family member that you haven't been in touch with for a while. So, as dead as it has been around here I think the forum still has a pulse. It's very weak but it's still there.

I am still interested in some of group activity like we did with the licks a while ago. Don't know what it should be, though, may just free soloing over a simple backing track?

Jack, There's nothing worse than seeing some snot nosed kid playing like that. At least she's probably 20 or so, not one of those 12 year old's belting out Stevie Ray Vaughan. Or just as bad, it takes me a month to learn and record a song - there are some young folks on YouTube who put one of those out once a week like it was nothing. Take heart though, I'm sure they'll have all quit playing by the time they get to be our age. Hmmm...the more I think about it I guess that isn't really much of a consolation.

This is still the very first site I check each morning. I hope we all keep it going, just need a bit more regular participation Over the years, posting to the "weekly update" has become a real habit; it makes me think about if I've made any actual progress and I always like to hear about what you guys are up to. And giving Phil crap about when he'll post a video has become a time-honored tradition I would like to see continue
