I practiced a lot last week, 2+ hours a day and 3 hours yesterday and today. Trying to get "Into the Arena" up to 90% tempo. There's that one lick I was whining about a couple weeks ago that goes from the bottom of the fretboard to the top at a zillion miles per hour. I can (barely) play it at 90% tempo along with the metronome - of course there's a huge difference between playing it over and over and over with the metronome vs. coming across it in the song lol. Oh well, nothing another trillion repetitions won't fix. The next "fixit" session is Wednesday so whatever I've got is what's going to get submitted. Hopefully by the end of April I'll have it at full tempo and not so incredibly sloppy. I can dream can't I? Hope you guys are all doing well.

Another slow guitar week for me. I did play some everyday, but again mostly "noodling" rather than anything goal directed. I think I did a Guitar Aerobics lesson only two days this week, but at least got my hand back in it some. I went and saw Bill Frissell play at a local jazz club Friday night. You just don't expect to see jazz players wielding a telecaster, but that's what he played (through a Fender Deluxe amp). Lots of left thumb over the top of the fretboard and lots of hybrid picking - two techniques I also don't strongly associate with jazz players. Was a good show, and nothing spurs me on like seeing someone play live, so hopefully it will light a fire under me! They've made good progress on our condominium, and it looks like we'll get to move there when we move out of the apartment at the end of April! In the meantime, more and more of our stuff is boxed up, and there's a million chores to take care of...

I've decided to get back to a slightly more structured practice schedule. Maybe like a 1/2 hour of drills (scales, arpeggios, chord voicings, etc) and then on to whatever I feel like. I've been practicing without any structure at all for over a year now and don't think it has been beneficial.
Bruce: I've watched several Bill Frissell videos but never got into his style of playing. I just don't like lots of effects when it come to Jazz guitar. I have the same problem with Mike Stern. However, I'd probably enjoy seeing them play live. The live thing is such a different experience.
Surprisingly, Teles are played by several well known Jazz players in addition to Frissell. There's a whole thread on Teles on one of the Jazz guitar forums. I think the late Ed Bickert started playing one in the mid 1960s. Tim Lerch is probably one of the better known contemporary Tele devotees. He was a student of Ted Green, who also played a Tele. I've seen several recent videos of Julian Lage playing one. It's certainly one of the most versatile guitars used in so many genres - Rock, Country, Funk, and Jazz.
Since you like Jazz guitar I recommend checking out Frank Vignola's Guitar Night at the Birdland YouTube videos. He plays there every Wednesday at 8:30 EST. Here's a link to the last one with guests guitarist Pascuale Grasso and trumpeter Warren Vache.

Hows everyone! I have been busy with the wife, but got a pass to play in our March show, the video of the whole show is really large, so may have to figure out a way you guys can watch it. Went pretty well started out a little rough but overall ok. Hated the amp tone somebody cranked it to max before i got on sounded good during sound check but i think the vol was down. So we are starting plan for a late june or early july show.
