Well, seems I now have a band in a box...
So, I heard about an idea to emulate a bass guitar through a normal guitar - essentially, play the guitar direct into the USB recording device (no amp) then in the DAW use an octive shift to have the notes an octave lower and pull up a bass amp emulator. So I did... and was pleased with the end result.
So, I went further...
I watched a youtube video on a basic shuffle drum pattern and created it in a virtual drum kit software, made it 12bars long, exported it to the DAW and recorded a simple bass riff over the 12 bars using my fingers with the above mentioned setup. I was quite surprised at what happend.
So, I went even further...
I recorded a rhythm guitar part in the style of Mr Reed (following my recent BRYCU exploits). This worked nicely when recorded, so I improvised over it and came up with a simple melody that worked and recorded that too!
Finally, I recorded a second rhythm guitar part to play some single strums to accent beats 2 and 4 and mixed the whole thing in the DAW.
Basically, I'm blown away with the results. Having never done this before, I'm amazed at what I was able to produce on my simple recording setup.
Your thoughts? Hear it below...

Well, WPB, I personally think that is the best thing you've ever posted. It's simple, has a nice repeating motif, and flat out sounds good. I like that Jimmy Reed shuffle too.
If you listen to a lot of Jimmy Reed you'll discover that he has the most diverse and interesting melodies in his songs, but the backing music is almost the same on every song.
Regarding my use of the word "simple." Muddy Waters once said that the Blues is simple music, but not easy.
Anyway, bottom line is that I really liked what you played here.

I just remembered that I played a bass line on guitar and lowered it with pitch shift in Reaper a few years ago. I completely forgot about it and never tried it again. I'm pretty sure I used a Beat Buddy pedal I had for the drums. Here's a blast from the past with my rendition of Magic Sam's "Sweet Home Chicago." The "quacking" rhythm guitar sound was my attempt to emulate the sound of Mighty Joe Young's rhythm guitar on the original album.

Great job - both you guys! WPB - really nice composition, very enjoyable to listen to, nice sound, bravo! Phil, great stuff man! Made me think of that collaboration we did together. Ya know, you're one hell of a guitarist...you should perhaps think about recording some more stuff!

Ya know, you're one hell of a guitarist...you should perhaps think about recording some more stuff! Thanks, Jack. That collaboration we did was pretty good. Sometimes I think I've regressed instead of progressed. That Bruce character sent me down the Jazz rabbit hole and then I decided to go fingerstyle instead of a pick which slowed progress down considerably. I'm my own worst enemy. However, I am enjoying what I'm doing and I've learned a ton of music theory, chord voicings and chord progressions. I'm going to participate in another one of those Jazz collaborations on Frank Vignola's Truefire Channel. I'll be forced to set up and record myself which might inspire me to do some additional recordings of the Jazz stuff I've been messing around with. My apologies to WPB for hijacking his thread.

Cool stuff, Wannaplay! You don't have a band in a box, you've got a band in yourself! I'd kind of forgotten about that trick of using pitch-shifting to play bass on your guitar. Your lead part sounds great. Great use of the Jimmy Reed rhythm, too. You are really using the Blues You Can Use now!
Phil, I'm with Jack - you ought to think about recording more stuff! Have you ever considered some blues?
