A *really* good week - posted 4 videos, one of which was my best ever playing Theory study is going slow; music reading has progressed - I can now read open position notes on the low-E string and the book added the 'A' note on the high-E string as a jump-to note. Basically, I can play all C scale notes in open position from 3 ledger-lines below the staff to 'A' on the ledger-line above the staff (albeit slowly). This week it's onwards with more BYCU, BRYCU, hope to record the next 12-Bar Blues Guitar piece and perhaps the next Solo Blues Guitar piece. The AM piece has two parts, rhythm and lead - rhythm I have down so hope to get one with the lead this week. Improv has been slow, but I'm working on a simple AAB style principle for 12 Bar Blues improv.

I had an okay week, working on "Rock of Ages." Got the solo figured out and now I'm just working it up to full tempo. I think I've got all the rhythm parts memorized, so that just needs a bunch more practice to improve the timing. And...that's about it Hope you guys all had a good week!

I played some every day this week. My fingers are pretty sore after that 3 week lay off. I'm really impressed with the number (and quality) of videos WPB is pumping out and the complexity (the layering of all those guitars) of the videos Jack has been posting. I'm almost inspired to make a video myself.

I'm almost inspired to make a video myself. Ditto what Phil said above. I also played some every day this week, except one day got busy doing a bunch of stuff and missed (I did make up the Guitar Aerobics assignment the next day). I tried plugging into my computer with my iRig2, but couldn't get rid of bad buzzing, so finally got frustrated with it and never recorded anything... I have definitely learned that THINKING you can play something and actually RECORDING it can be two very differing realities, and I realize that I really need to record myself to try to objectively evaluate where I stand. I think both Jack and WPB have fixed studio setups, which definitely makes recording (both audio and video) much, much simpler. I'm hoping we finally move into our condo within the next several months, at which time I should be able to re-assemble my fixed studio setup. In the meantime, I probably just need to do some audio only recording to see whether I can actually play these BRYCU pieces, or whether I'm just deluding myself. It's been interesting re-visiting this book, because I had gone through it (as well as BYCU) before I ever found this forum, and I never actually recorded myself back then. I'm suspecting that I actually could never really play any of these as well as I was thinking I could, so re-visiting them is probably a good thing!

Bruce, You make some good points about what you think you can do and what you can actually do. I have always had that problem. For example, I'll watch a video about something like playing the arpeggios thru a song as a first step in creating your own solos. I'll think, "I can do that with no problem. No need to practice it." Later I'll discover that I can't actually do it.
I continue to think I can find a shortcut. The reality is that the way to get better is to to practice and repeat ad nauseam the seemingly simple things until they're second nature.
