Okay, been working on the video thing again. I'm getting better at putting videos together, and hopefully improving my geetar chops. This is "Blues For Charlie": I think I mixed the lead guitar too low on the audio. The equipment is my standard stuff: lead guitar SX GG6, rhythm guitar MIM Strat. Both were recorded dry, processed using Line 6 Pod Farm software. The drums and bass are again, made in a program called Band In A Box. These are fun to make! All comments/suggestions/advice appreciated. Bruce

That's pretty cool! Where did you get Band in a Box? Not that I'll be attempting anything like what you've done in the near future, but someday I may get up the courage! Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Tommy. Tried to respond to this earlier, but it seems to have vanished into cyberspace... Band In A Box is made by a company called PG Music. They are, of course, on the web: www.pgmusic.com/index.htmlIt is a musical accompaniment program, for creating a "band", so to speak. I've used it to make the bass and drum parts for these "Jazzin' The Blues" videos. Also useful for practice (the band never complains about you messing up, wanting to play the same thing over and over, they're never drunk, never late for practice, never drink all your beer, never hit on your girlfriend, etc). You basically enter your chord progression, select a musical style, and the program makes the tracks. Between Band In a Box (accompaniment), Logic Pro (audio recording), and iMovie (video editing), this seems more of a computer project than a music project! Bruce

Very cool, Bruce. And your twin brother plays very well too. You're pushing me to consider Jazzin' the Blues after I finish BYCU. Maybe I could work it simultaneously with More BYCU.

Nice recording! I like that you do both rhythm and leads parts... And the Starwars-like credits were a nice touch I also have Jazzin' the Blues lying around; when I get through BUCY, I think I will have a go at it. It definitely sounds cool.

Phil Thanks, Phil. I think Jazzin' The Blues and MBYCU would go together well in tandem - I've even thought that maybe I should finish BYCU and do the same. Bruce

Joachim, thanks for listening. I like your new online image, too. That looks like a fine tool for some jazz blues! Bruce

Very, very nice, Bruce - and how convenient that your brother is a guitar player, too! Man, those videos are so good, I either have to review my low budget/first shot policy when it comes to recording or just quit posting at all (or you decide to link me up to George Lucas as well : ... keep up the good work, that's some great progress!!! Thanks, Tbone. I'm not out to intimidate anyone from posting videos or recordings - my intent is exactly the opposite - to encourage it. What's really funny is that these are not really high budget or high tech at all. I did chance into a nice iMac when my wife abandoned it, and did the same with a nice Macbook when my son went to college (with a new computer). Those brought me into the "modern computer age" (I was using a Lenovo thinkpad with Windoze XP). I'm sure the same can be done in the Windows realm. The video is recorded on my iPhone, the audio on the iMac. Then I'm putting the videos together on the Macbook (obviously the audio recording and video editing could all be done on the same computer). You could probably even record the video on a laptop with a built in web camera, and do everything on one computer. Anyway, I'm having fun doing these, and the project has also helped me learn to use the audio and video software. So, please don't quit posting - join the fray, let your blues be heard! Bruce

Tbone and Jack,
Thanks for the feedback. Part of doing this is because I didn't find any JTB recordings out on the net, just to let people see/hear some, see if it's something they'd like. Of course, I also wanted to expand my horizons. Another part of doing this was that I wanted to learn to use audio and video software. I'm currently working on the next couple of lessons - hope to post a few more videos when I get some time. Maybe this weekend - sounds like they're predicting rain here...

Bruce Yeah I've got that Jazzin' the Blues book but it's not really my style of music I guess. I'd very much like to get that Rhythm and Blues book though. I listened to some samples on the store here at the site and loved it. I'm also trying to figure out this audio software, that Band in a Box you use sounds awesome. I was reading up a bit on it at their site and it seems incredibly versatile. From what I've been able to Google it seems like it would work with Audacity which I use; I might have to put that at the top of my shopping list

Bruce,
it's very valuable that you make these videos - thanks! It's certainly helpful for me right now to have some BYCU references to look at, and when I get to JTB, you recordings will be a great help as well.
Jack, I have only played around a little with BIAB, so I don't know much about it, but I really like it. One piece of advice, though, you probably want to save up for the "MegaPAK" version before you buy it; the cheapest version seems too limited in number of styles, etc. At least I found it difficult to create interesting blues-flavoured backing-tracks using the basic version called "PRO". I am hoping to use BIAB to generate a drum/bass backing-track for "Getting Funky", and have a go at both the rhythm and lead part, we will see how it goes. John G. posted tabs for the rhythm part of "Getting Funky" on his website.

I'm going to save up for a bass guitar (if/when I ever get my current bills paid off) and then get either Band in a Box or else maybe EZ Drummer or something like that. The ability to add some keyboard parts would be awesome too I think, so maybe BIAB would be a good choice.

Thanks, Joachim. And Jack, I would second what he advised about BIAB - if you buy it, get the MegaPak - otherwise you'll be wanting more styles, more real tracks. It's most cost effective to buy it all together. Also, watch their website as they usually have sales in the summer and before Christmas - can save you some serious money.
