1. You can still play it when your 85 years old and not look silly. 2. Nobody expects you to play anything exactly the way somebody else does. 3. You are encouraged to be creative. 4. You won't find any "You're Playing it Wrong" YouTube videos. Although you will see videos complaining about how wrong "The Real Book" is, so that's a bit of a dichotomy. 5. Learning music theory is good exercise for my old brain. 6. Memorizing melodies and complex chord progressions is even more brain exercise. 7. The songs that have become standards have strong, beautiful, memorable melodies and interesting chord progression. The standards are timeless. 8. Believe it or not, you don't need to have highly developed technique to play something that sounds reasonably good. 9. You can easily play with other people (if you so desire) because they most likely know the same songs. 10. You don't need an elaborate pedal board. Just an amp and a guitar. If fact you don't even need an amp. You can play the same songs exactly the same way acoustically or amped. DownsideThere are more petty, pedantic, arrogant a$$holes on Jazz forums who enjoy over complicating everything.
