I'd like to apologize for being so late with getting this challenge posted. I remain committed to this BLYCU project and I HAVE NOT dropped out, though I never got a recording of lick 7 posted. This challenge is going to "up the ante" some, so we'll see how it goes. We're going to try TWO licks this time: (1) lick 8 - a two bar lick that goes over the IV chord and (2) lick 9 - a two bar lick that goes over the I chord. These are presented in the book as bars 5 & 6 (lick 8) and bar 7 & 8 (lick 9) in a 12 bar blues. Both licks have some pick-up notes and ending notes extending past the designated bars, and these will have to be omitted or adjusted to put them together (JG talks some about this on page 13 of the book). My Guitar Pro version starts with Lick 4, omits some of it in favor of the pick-up for lick 8. Then the ending extension of lick 8 and the pick-up of lick 9 are both omitted. The last bar of lick 9 segues into the IV chord in the book, so I've moved it up two frets to go over the V chord (in bar 9), and then lowered it back for the IV chord (in bar 10). Throw in a stock turnaround, and you've got a 12 bar chorus! (I did not put one in for the Guitar Pro demo). Sticking with our two week cycle, due date will be Sunday, August 2. Of course, everyone is free to (and encouraged to) "do your own thing" with these licks!

Thanks, Bruce. After a couple days I'm starting to get 8 under my fingers at slow tempo, and I've sort of fingered my way through 9 without regard to tempo.
Several movements/note choices outside what I'm used to playing which adds a little extra interest to the task of working them up.

Grampa, I'm right with you - got Lick 8 mostly under my fingers, just need repetition, repetition, repetition... Hope to work on Lick 9 this weekend, and then trying to make something out of the two of them next week. This has really been a great exercise for me, as well. Just trying to string some of these licks together in my Guitar Pro version was kind of interesting, and has really got me to thinking about stringing phrases together, and I think JG really intended for the student to start thinking about what makes a phrase work over this chord but not that chord. Oh, and I've got to start thinking about the next BLYCU challenge!

Edit: First half of Lick 4 then Lick 9, dropped the last bar of 9 to segue into Lick 8. Took some liberty with the rhythm of the notes in 8.

Grampa, that was great! Very melodic and well put together.
I will need a couple of days extension - after I got back from vacation I've been feeling sick as a dog. I took a COVID 19 test yesterday and now I am waiting for the result, so I have no energy at all for playing...

Grampa, very cool stuff! Loved the guitar tone. Great job Joachim, sure hope you didn't catch that damned virus. Take it easy and I hope you feel well soon!

Thanks Joachim and Jack. Usually I try to get a clean amp sound and push it to break up just a bit with volume knob and picking hard. This time I used a Mesa Lonestar model, "lead" channel with both gains cranked pretty high, but with very low master volume (~1), low guitar volume (<3) and tried to pick softly to keep it clean. Altogether a mashup of tricks I read via the helix community and watched on Youtube (Tim Pierce + Tom Bukovac). It's more fun to pick hard. Dunno that one sounds better than the other, and both suffer from a dose of GrampaL.
Edit: Sorry to hear you're under the weather Joachim. I hop it's nothing serious and you're back to your old self soon.

I've also noticed that having quite a bit of gain, but turning the guitar volume way down and picking lightly can produce some awesome sounds. Problem is I never remember to do that

Cool stuff, grampa. I liked sliding lick 9 up to bars 3 & 4, ahead of lick 8 in bars 5 & 6. Tone sounds good to me. Solid all around. I just got home from a week at the lake, but don't have anything recorded yet. As you're the only one who has posted by the deadline, I think we'll have to add some days to this challenge. If you're wanting to "work ahead", then next one will be licks 10 and 12.

But sometimes it's better to finish up and move on. I did take a look at 10 and 12 this morning. 10 has some tricky timing but it sounds cool and the notes aren't hard to grab. Long way to go to get the flow though. 12 sounds sort of strange in isolation, be interesting to hear it in context eventually.

Thanks, Joachim, I was feeling a little weird for being the only one to throw something out there. That was cool throwing lick 8 into the turnaround so you could do the whole of 9. Altogether very nicely composed and played!

Strong work, Joachim! It's interesting to hear how you others used these licks. I'll try to get next challenge posted and something recorded for this one!

OK, here's my submission, warts and all. No video this go around, in the interest of getting something put up. There's some bad bends and flubbed notes - not my proudest moment. I started with lick 4, went into lick 8, then followed with lick 9.

I liked it a lot, Bruce! Great that you submitted something also - this 14 day routine is bound to pay off...
