OK, time for another two bar lick that fits over the IV chord - so far bars 5 & 6 in a twelve bar blues. "Due date" for this one will be Sunday, July 19. Here it is presented following lick 2 over the first four bars (Guitar Pro versions), then followed by the audio version over a metronome count. This one is kind of a bear to try to count out, so it may be easier "by ear". Of course, you don't have to follow lick 2, this is just for demonstration purposes! Do whatever you'd like with it...

Okay, well, this one is a little embarrassing. It's me "just winging it" so it's a mess. Two Grampa firsts though: first time I switched pickups in the middle of a "solo", and the first time I've played that high up the neck in maybe 30 years. Of course, I flubbed BLYCU7 a little. The best thing about this exercise is that it reinforces that I'm not ready for open blues night yet. soundcloud.com/grampalerxst/blycu-7-2/s-cqwiUVjPZzY

I thought you were sounding good. I like that screaming kind of tone! I didn't think Lick 7 was off by much. It moves pretty quickly up to speed, so it's hard to really tell. I beg to differ - I think the best thing about this exercise is that it moves you forward in the direction of playing an open blues night. You and I both may not be there, but this is takin' us in that direction!

Only thing I noticed was that last 2 or 3 bends might have been a tad flat or my ears otherwise the rest of the lick sounded excellent. Really liked that tone. great job.

Here's my video of Lick 7.
Grampa, that was cool! And killer tone, as mentioned.

Specific to blues I feel like I've made bigger strides with the challenge than I have with anything for a long time. So yep, a baby step closer each fortnight. Because I was trying to get fancy and switch pickups while playing I got to the G-note I was using to transition into lick 7 a bit late, which had me off kilter all the way through 7. Sounds to me like I had an extra note in the last phrase (let the bend sag?). Dunno, that one was just a tough one for me.

Really liked that tone. great job. Thanks Rich, decided after 6 to gain it up a bunch, inspired by Mick iirc--used one of the more inappropriate amp models for blues at my disposal (Revv Generator). To me once I got above the 15th fret near the end it all sounded a little weird and out of tune. Likely I had the neck in a death grip due to unfamiliarity. Need to work on playing more up there.

Here's my video of Lick 7. Grampa, that was cool! And killer tone, as mentioned. Thanks, Joachim. It was sort of like I was channeling my inner Buddy Guy, just without all the skill, haha. About a foot beyond the edge of control. I have to wait until I get home to check yours out.

Nicely done, Joachim. Sounds very smooth. Nailed lick 7 it sounds like to me!

Yeah I am not too comfortable in that area either, and cant really control my bends. My instructor said use more grip around the neck, so now I squeeze it like a bat lol and thats when the high breaks lol.

Yeah I am not too comfortable in that area either, and cant really control my bends. My instructor said use more grip around the neck, so now I squeeze it like a bat lol and thats when the high breaks lol. I've got pretty well habituated to rely on my wrist for bends and I think it's everything else around the bends where I tend to squeeze too much. I'm not calibrated for the length of the neck. By that I mean bending in different positions means managing force differently, i.e., bending say the G-string at the 3rd fret up one step versus bending the same string up one step from the 12th fret requires different amounts of travel opposed by different levels of force. I just don't have the reps bending at the 18th fret to intone those reliably. Another thing that exacerbates my woes is having my Suhr guitar that has a really nice bridge but utilizes only three springs and will give a little when a string is bent like a traditional Strat. In contrast my Ibanez AT has a very similar trem, but utilizes five springs, so against the force of a bend (at least up to a 3-fret bend, the biggest I ever try) it doesn't give at all and behaves like a "hard tail". So on the Suhr I need to bend farther against a little less tension to intone the bend. Then I get on the Ibanez and initially over bend everything reflexively trying to achieve the travel required on the Suhr. Then once I get recalibrated and switch back to the Suhr and initially I under bend reflexively replicating the travel required on the Ibanez. Being able to trust my ear somewhat is a relatively new "feature". Trying to switch between instruments with differing characteristics or even differing regions of the same instrument was chaos prior to the beta version of the new feature. Of course, when I'm trying to widdly-diddly improvise my brain is thinking about where to go next and I mentally "let go" of bends before they complete, and when it's not a bend I've done a thousand times before, I reliably conjur up the musical equivalent of nausea (really, that's the association I have with my sour bends).
