OK, next we move to the middle four! Lick 6 is a two bar lick over the IV chord. My demo includes a Guitar Pro version over the backing track, which is put up following Lick 5 over the first four bars for demonstration purposes. At 0:50 is the audio lick over a metronome beat. Due date for this will be JULY 5. Again, do what you will with it - play it in a different key, different position, change the timing - whatever. You can use one of the first five licks for the first four bars if you choose.

OK, so I've put both Lick 5 (first four bars) and Lick 6 (bars 5 and 6) into a 12 bar chorus. Sorry, my video quit recording about a minute into this.

Cool stuff there Bruce! I've been working on the exact same thing, putting 5 and 6 together - funny thing is I've also been repeating the last little hammer-on thing at the end of lick 6 exactly like you did lol. It just seems to fit.

Nice work Bruce--actually you did an 18-bar chorus so award yourself 33% extra credit! I haven't done that little repeat of the hammer on the downbeat. I'm still working on something to get me through the first four bars. I just noticed the due date on this one is July 1 rather than a July 5. Almost no change I'll have something by next Wednesday. Sorry about that. Maybe I'll post something over the long holiday weekend if the thread hasn't fallen too far down the page.

OOPS - you are correct: due date for this should be SUNDAY, JULY 5. My bad! We'll stick with the two week cycle on these unless there's an uprising to do otherwise - I'll edit the original post to reflect this.

Nice work, Bruce. I really liked how you pieced together complete choruses using the different licks. Sounded really good - great work!

OK, this is my crack at Lick 6 (plus lick 5 as I missed posting last week).
The last 4 bars are sort of lifted and transposed from a blues licks book by a Peter Gelling, I think it fits the style of the tune quite well. There are a few of the previously learned licks added as well to keep them current.
Not my best effort by far but you know what it's like when you hit the red button!!!

Sounding good, Mick! You got in both licks 5 and 6, covered two 12-bar choruses, AND soloed over the intro. Woke up the dog with that screamin' tone, as well. I think lifting and transcribing licks from other books is fair game - I was a little surprised no one called me out for using part of "Bending The Blues" in my Licks 5 & 6 video. Glad you are still with us on this project, Mick - several of us missed posting on the Lick 5 round, and I'm hoping everyone will stay with us on this BLYCU journey.

soundcloud.com/grampalerxst/blycu-6-2Nothing imported from Blues by the Bar in this one--too tall of a mountain for me to scale this week. I opened with some kindergartner phrases from the major pentatonic to lead into lick 6. After that I recycled a couple of homemade licks I'd tried using in past Challenge chorus attempts (I'm going to keep dropping them in every now and again until I get them right, ha). Then ended with some simple cliches. This wasn't supposed to be my "official" recording for the week. I just had the tape rolling while doing practice play throughs last night and take 4 was relatively good. I like this one better than most of my previous Challenge attempts.

I liked that phrase you used to anchor the turnaround each time. I also liked the gained up tone. I'm getting bored with cleanish tones so maybe i'll let 'er rip a little next time.

Really nice Gramps, sounding smooth, laid back and effortless, as slow blues should be. Good work!!

Nicely done, grampa! I like Mick's description of sounding "effortless" as a fitting description. I thought the clean tone worked just fine, but that's one of the beauties of the blues - you can use just about any tone you like!

I thought the clean tone worked just fine, but that's one of the beauties of the blues - you can use just about any tone you like! Thanks, Mick and Bruce. Sounding "effortless" is among the most meaningful compliments I've received regarding my guitar efforts. Outside of lick 6 none of it is particularly challenging in a technical sense, although ironically playing through it a bunch of time leaves my fretting hand pretty wore out, especially all the little stabilizer muscles around my knuckles. The cost of attempting to keep it legato and having a sense of flow.
Regarding the tone I'm fine with it for this example. I tend to work these exercises up with a predetermined tone which informs what and how I try to play. The main tone I actually played while recording had a little bit of hair on it, but not so much to make the tonic maj 3 double-stop that lick 6 ends on sound too messy. Then I reamped a clean Fender model to blend in. For spending all of 5 mins on the mix I sort of liked it. Although I may be setting myself up for it, it's been a while since I got a tone smack down .
Which reminds me of an unrelated point. I use amp modeling for the vast majority of my recording, and lurking around some places on the internet there's lots of discussion about different tones achievable through different gear (analog and digital) lacking in various ways. I've tried to challenge myself to adapt my playing to any reasonable "tone". I often fail spectacularly. It might be a mistake too--maybe it's better to pick a core tone and focus on maximizing what I can do with it. But forcing myself to stay on my toes with touch and articulation keeps it interesting.
Thanks again for the kind words.

Really nice, Mick and Grampa. Very different ideas.
I am falling behind this week. Maybe I will catch up tonight, or I'll try to record something tomorrow.
Happy 4th of July to those of you who celebrated it!

I am late again, but here is a single chorus. Weird ending, have to work on that for next week.
