Hi Folks, Hope you are all doing good. I finally managed to record myself for this study as well as study #3. I had a technical problem with study #2 and I will record later. I was planning on creating a new thread for this study so everyone can go and share their own version. Please, do not hesitate to say what is wrong if you have a chance to listen to it. As a reminder, I started last February (or end of Jan I can't recall exactly). soundcloud.com/the-big-fabowski/bycu-02-texas-rock-3-avrilThanks! Big Fab

Big Fab,
Nicely done. I don't know where I would improve upon it or correct it.

Listening to it, I realize a lot to be improved actually I think I am too shy with the pick, especially for the strumming. I am not able to find an even level of strumming during the whole song (equal sound/rendering I mean) but this is not that bad on this take. This is my 3rd or 4th take I think. Thanks for your feedbacks

I have been working on cleaning up my chords, speeding up chord progressions, etc., so I redid lesson 1. soundcloud.com/joachim-dahl-1/texasrockI think I reduced the staccato-style picking I used to have, and the chords are cleaner than before. Any thoughts on the recording? I think I can move on - it's also about time; this afternoon my youngest son was humming Texas Rock when I picked him up in kindergarten. I am still working on chord progressions - this seems like my weak spot... Joachim

That was pretty good, Big Fab. Nicely done. I highly recommend that you spend the $10.00 to download the backing tracks. They are well worth it. You'll find that it is very very different to play with a backing track that doesn't have the guitar part for you to follow. I guarantee that it will be an eye opening experience the first time you try it.

Joachim, this is very good. Happy to see some people with equal level of guitar are also sharing their studies. Let's continue like that Cheers, Big Fab

thanks Big Fab,
I agree - sharing these recordings seems like a good way to evaluate progress, and it's comforting to know that others are struggling with same passages... When I play along to John's recordings, I often feel "mission accomplished", but when I listen to the recording I realize there is much to be improved. A sticky thread would be good though, so we don't clutter up the forum for the others.
Like Phil, I would also recommend buying the backing tracks. It's makes recording much easier - and some of them are really great; not just your vanilla 12 bar blues backings tracks. Some seem more refined than the original tracks also - perhaps John revised the backing tracks?
Cheers Joachim

Cheers Joachim I think I posted something a while back regarding my 1st experience with playing along with a backing track. It wasn't pretty. I was completely lost without the recorded guitar part to guide me. However, like anything else, if you have the self-discipline to stick with it you will get better. Playing with a backing track is like playing in a band. You 1st have to have the music under your fingers and then you discover very soon that you MUST pay close attention to what the drums and bass are doing. This is something you will never fully grasp until you try it. I've recently started to NOT tap my foot and see if I can follow the rhythm section with my ear. It's not easy for me, but little by little I'm getting better at it. Regarding the backing tracks: John Ganapes mentioned a while back that the backing tracks for BYCU were recorded well after the original recordings and differ a bit. But the rhythm and chord changes are still in the same places. I have to admit that I'm still thrown off and distracted sometimes by the rhythm guitar. It's kind of like an aural version of tapping your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time. However, I'm confident that proper practice and time will resolve these problems. Phil

Bigfab, you don't happen to be related to Miley Cyrus, do you? Anyhow, nice playing! If this is the Texas Rock thread, I recorded a version of it a while back. I guess I didn't have the backing tracks at the time so it's just me and the drum machine. soundcloud.com/jack-c8/texas-rock

Bigfab, nice job on that. I'd suggest to turn the guitar up louder in the mix. Of course, that's what I want to hear front and center!
Jack, you put a swing rhythm on Texas Rock, which works well. Just makes it sound a bit different from the book CD.
Thanks for sharing

Bruce, yeah I think I tried it with a straight quarter note drum part but it just didn't "feel" right or something to me. Now that I've got the backing tracks I should probably give it another go.

Big Fab,
I like that mix more - I can hear the guitar better. I think you've got that one down pretty well, time to move onward.
