Say what you want but of all of the versions of Sweet Home Chicago that I've heard, Freddie was the man! His vocals, guitar and the interaction that he had with his audience..... lets just say that he is my favorite of the 3 Kings. BB & Albert were amazing in their own right but Freddie possessed qualities that few performers have. To me, Freddie was the SRV of his generation bursting on the scene

Definitely some good stuff. I love Albert King's playing, but don't like his voice. Don't misunderstand me - he has a very good singing voice, but it isn't what I consider a good Blues voice. B.B's playing is, of course, great, but I never cared for all the horns in his band. When it comes to Freddy King I like his voice, his playing is great, and when he did play with horns they didn't play such a dominant role as with B.B. King. Plus he was such a dynamic high energy performer. I've never seen a video of him where he is not sweating. Check out the other guitarist - not a drop of sweat. I wish I was aware of him when I was younger.
I know he used a finger pick on his index finger, but did he also use a thumb pick? I can't tell from the videos I've seen.

Phil Freddie was known to wear metal finger picks and a plastic thumb pick. In his earlier recordings, he used P90 equipped Les Paul's and when you couple that with the finger picks that he wore, the result was a sharp driving attack that became his persona. I think Albert Collins was the only player to have a more sharp tone than Freddie.
Here is another great tune that he did and that Clapton covered on the Layla release.
