Rich told me to check out this week's "Lick of the Week" on the home page. It's Gary Clark's version of Albert Collins' song, "If Trouble Was Money." Well, this is a classic example of how you can mix and match with the Blues. He usually plays an Epiphone Casino, here his playing a Telecaster, like Albert Collins. But the interesting thing is his intro and accompaniment to this song is almost note for note from Magic Sam's "All Your Love."
I'll admit to being a Magic Sam fanboy, but I do like Gary Clark a lot and he does a great job with this Albert Collins/Magic Sam hydrid. Clark does some of the most original solos around. Speaking of originality, nobody was more original than Albert Collins. Notice that Albert has a capo on the 7th fret!
Gary Clark "If Trouble Was Money."
Magic Sam. Watch the whole thing. Notice that he plays with bare fingers and it sounds like he's playing with a pick.
He does it his way.

Wow. Magic Sam rules!!! I'll listen to the Gary Clark version of 'If Trouble was Money' again later, but right now I could swear the guitar of the guy soloing is out of tune... have to revisit tomorrow, must hurry... Yeah, I think it is. However, that guy, King Zapata, is part of Clark's regular band and he is usually very good. Just having a bad day I guess. However, listen to Clark's solo. Magic Sam was the man. Unfortunately, he died at about age 32 back in '69 or '70. There are a few live versions of "Lookin' Good" around, but this one knocks my socks off every time I hear it. If I couldn't see him playing, I would swear he was using a pick. It's incredible.

All three really cool videos, Phil. Albert Collins is an old favorite of mine, and I do like Gary Clark, Jr. I'm not so familiar with Magic Sam, but I know you've spoken of liking him quite a bit. I may just need to get me some more CD's...

It has a much slower version of "Lookin' Good" which is kinda cool to contrast with the super fast live version in the video. There are a lot of dubious compilations floating around and some very low quality live albums that sound like bootlegs. His other big (and maybe only) studio album was "Black Magic" which is also good. I heard that his "Live at the Avant Garde" is supposed to be a good quality live album. I just noticed that I used the word "album" several times. I guess that shows my age.

That was excellent, note though if you look close he appears to be using finger picks and not bare fingers.

That was excellent, note though if you look close he appears to be using finger picks and not bare fingers. The resolution is bad on Magic Sam's video, but I can't see any finger picks. I could be wrong. I've always heard that he played with bare fingers. Now, I'm pretty sure I've seen videos of Albert Collins where he's using a finger pick just on his index finger. But, if you look at 2:47 he raises his hand and you can clearly see that he's not wearing any picks.
