My son has been experimenting with video and audio recording - lighting, mic placement, etc. This is the result. I think it's pretty good, but I'm probably just a tiny bit biased, so you be the judge. Now you are going to expect a video from me. I'm not ready, yet.

Tell him congrat's from me Thanks, Jack, I'll pass along your kind words. Yeah, these are his very 1st attempts at video. As far as the playing - he had not hardly touched a guitar in 15 years. Less than 5 months ago he picked up my old flamenco guitar and decided that he wanted to learn to play finger style. These videos were recorded with a low-end Samsung smart phone and an SM57 mic going through a Mackie Pro8 mixer into Reaper. The audio on "Sambolero" was recorded with the mic far away and the gain turned up which resulted in an audible hiss. For "Londonderry Aire" the mic was placed close to the guitar and has a much better sound quality. The only post production effects were EQ (just a low pass filter) and a tiny touch of reverb to give it some depth. Now I have even more motivation to get practicing.

Those are cool, Phil. I like the "swimming background" effect in Sambolero. I haven't played a nylon string in like a thousand years, but can still appreciate it. I thought the sound was excellent in both videos.

He should rename it to "Psychedelic Sambolero."

I liked the video work in the first video, did he do that by his self? If so did he use like multiple cameras at the same time to get the angles?

I liked the video work in the first video, did he do that by his self? If so did he use like multiple cameras at the same time to get the angles? The 1st video above is actually the 2nd video he did. He used 1 camera, a low-end Samsung smart phone. I think he did 3 full recordings from different angles and cut pasted between the 3 video angles. The background is actually the same background as in the other one (the one with the psychedelic moving walls). The lighting gives it the effect of a black back ground. I think Bruce pointed out in an earlier post about the importance of lighting. From my son's videos it becomes apparent that lighting is the secret to getting a good video. More important than even the quality of the camera.

I like that tip about different recordings from different angles, then cutting and pasting between them. It made a really interesting video. I may have to give that a try sometime...
And yes; lighting, lighting, lighting...

And yes; lighting, lighting, lighting... Bruce OK, I just got the explanation straight from the horses mouth. He did 1 take of video while recording the audio. Then he did 2 additional video takes from 2 different angles while listening to the audio through speakers and actually playing along with the audio. He then cut and pasted the video from the 3 different angles (which were all in sync). So, essentially, he's "lip-syncing" 2 of the video angles. BTW, this was all done in Reaper. I wasn't even aware of the video editing capabilities of Reaper.

Yeh I picked up the lighting techning, because I use it in my other hobby photography. The multi angle technique turned out well I was wondering because their wasnt any synchronization issues between the video and audio. Not sure I complimented the playing so on my part it was damn fine playing also.
