While mindlessly surfing Youtube, I clicked on one of those "you might also like" links titled "7 Common Guitar Mistakes" or some such. Anyway, brought me to a video that I thought had some thought-provoking points. It's by a guy named Nate Savage (who I'd never heard of or watched before). It's about a 10 minute video, but I'll break down his seven points here (as well as give a link if you want to see the whole video):
1. not setting goals 2. wasting practice time noodling 3. strumming from the elbow (locking wrist) / using all downstrokes 4. poor muting (using both fretting and picking hands) 5. not using very tips of fingers to fret notes 6. not learning to tune well by ear 7. not applying what you’ve been practicing (using scales, chords in real music) 8. (bonus point) get your guitar set up by a professional
Anyway, I found this interesting and thought maybe someone else on here might as well. He said these are the biggest reasons he sees his students not make progress or not sound good when they play. Here's a link if you're interested to see the video:

Thanks for posting this, Bruce. I saw this before several months ago, but it's always good to review this stuff from time to time.
BYCU and this forum have helped me with #1. Keeping a practice log and using a timer have helped with #2. I'm trying to work on the rest regularly.
#5 might be true for many chords, but #4 points out that this tip is not always the best way to fret. I didn't understand this for a long time, and always tried to use the very tips all the time.
These are good general tips.

Phil, I think I'm guilty of all 8 of these (with the possible exception of #3). This just sort of hit home with me, that i need probably need to start with #1, and work my way down the list from there...

Bruce Yeah, you, me and probably every other wannabe guitarist except those that had exceptional teachers and/or an innate ability to be aware of these things and overcome them. I have to say that when I started playing tuning by ear (#6) was the only option, so that was never a problem for me. I imagine that today with tuners being so ubiquitous that there are nubes who can't tune without one. Come to think of it, I'm not so sure I can do it anymore.

I have seen Nate Savage's items on sale before. Having seen his other free videos they all seem pretty basic - so I'm sure his real stuff is in the paid-for items.
I try and avoid noodling (point 2) by having something I can work on all the time. Any time I pickup my guitar I have something that I am working on that I can start playing again.
