I got in 6 days of practice for a total of 7 hrs. - 4hrs. on MBYCU and 3 hrs. on Jazz. I started on the 2nd half of "Big Bends." It has more bends than the Ohio River and that's what makes it so hard. There is also a very difficult to play lick that is repeated 5 times. I fooled around with "True Trem" a bit, but need to seriously get into it. In the Jazz area I got the rhythm to "Blue Bossa" down and am working on a chord melody for it. This is the 1st Jazz standard I've attempted. Actually it's the 1st Jazz anything I've attempted. A couple of months ago my son got interested in Brazilian Jazz and from there to Jazz in general and I've followed him down that rabbit hole. Now I'm hooked. I need to come up with a comprehensive plan of attack for learning Jazz. There are just too many things to learn and I really need to figure out how to approach it. I bought a course on constructing chord melodies. Yeah, that's right, I bought another course. I couldn't help it. It had very good reviews. I also found an incredible amount of free stuff on the Internet. I may have bitten off way more than I can chew. EDIT: I don't visit the home page as often as I should, but I just did and the "Lick of the Week" is one by Kenny Burrell. I just thought that that was a bit of an odd coincidence.

I got about 8 hours of practice this week. Mostly worked on getting a decent recording on hard edge blues, timing issue mosly resolved, need to clean up the bends. Been using a spider picking excersise to help improve my alt picking, also do hand gym excercise. Started on preaching the blues. I also started learning texas flood from my Hal Leonard play along book. Worked on lick one from blues licks you can use.

I was kind of lazy this week, only got in 9 hours on guitar and 3 1/2 on bass. Whatever happened to those weeks when I was getting in close to 20 hours? I've gotta rededicate myself But I got Groovin' Funk recorded and everybody seemed to like it, so that's a very nice accomplishment. I got started on the next song in the R&B book, "Minor Soul Chop" which is without a doubt one of my favorite songs in that book. Spent half the day yesterday programming a drum track for it. I've got a preliminary take of the bass and rhythm guitar parts laid down, and they'll need to be worked on and re-recorded numerous times before I'm done, but at least I've got something to practice the lead guitar part along with. Worked a little bit on Tremblin' Tremolo in More BYCU. I was practicing it up to full tempo but I wasn't happy with my accuracy so I went back to two-thirds tempo, which is agonizingly slow, and I'm working my way back up again. Hopefully it won't take me as long this time as it did the first time. Also worked a bit on D Minor Blues in the Rhythm book; I play through the rhythm part, then next time through I improvise over my backing track. That way my hand doesn't get cramped up from all the bar chords. I'm still hoping to record my own solo for that song, but so far inspiration has eluded me. On bass I worked a little bit on Bass Aerobics and also practiced the part for Tremblin' Tremolo some more. I laid down a satisfactory bass track for that song a long time ago, but it's fun to practice and I figured I could improve it a bit. Also worked on the bass for Groovin' Funk and Minor Soul Chop. Got almost caught up on my Coursra classes, only a few Music Production videos left to watch. I'm learning so much from that class - I finally know how to use a compressor and this past week he covered EQ and delay. Really in-depth stuff with lots of real-life examples. If you do recording, definitely check out this class next time it's available, I can't recommend it highly enough.

I started on "Hard Rocker" - I've only been working on the rhythm part, then I will start on the lead part next week. I didn't start a new study in BRYCU; it'd be too many things at once.
Also been working on licks - I can feel my playing improving already, I think. Learning the licks over the backing track is starting to give me a fealing of where am I without counting so much. And I did a fair bit of fingerplaying.

I'm moving on in the rhythm book to lesson 14 "Got The Drive", this will be another new technique for me - using the thumb on the 6th string. Staying with the arpeggaited barre chords I'm picking up "Slow Dance Dreams" in the R&B book. On the bass side of things I have started working on Eric Clapton's "Run Back To Your Side", this one has fair pace and is a real test of concentration and stamina for me, there are also some interesting nuances in the phrasing so it will be a great on to get to grips with. Plenty for me to do this week then.

Been busy the past week, didn't play much. Friday saw Elvis Costello at the Cain's Ballroom. I know it's not the blues, but this was just him singing and playing an acoustic guitar (no band), and I'm quite impressed with anyone who can put on an entire show this way. We were about 25 feet from him, so I could pretty well see what he was doing on guitar. Lots of rhythmic and percussive strumming, played quite a bit finger style. All his acoustics were plugged in, and he definitely used some different effects. He was, I believe, playing thru a couple of Fender electric guitar amps, which were miked and played thru the PA system. The main guitar he played looked like a well-worn Gibson J45. Played a few songs on a hollow-body electric. Even played a Fender Jaguar some. Fun show. Cain's is an iconic small club venue, full of lots of history. Great place to see a show. We're now on vacation (or holiday) in Belize. No snow on the ground here! Won't be playing any guitar, though... Bruce (note the sunglasses)
