I probably heard Bo Diddley's original version of "Who Do You Love" as a kid since I had older siblings, but I didn't really become aware of it until Quick Silver Messenger Service did their version in the 60's. Most younger people probably know it from Georger Thorogood's version, which became a staple of his live performances.
Today, I ran across a video on youtube of the Stones playing "Who Do You Love" with Bo Diddley. Well, I sensed that something was amiss and quickly looked up Bo's original version and listened to it.
I was slapped in the back of the head by a revelation. Now, I may be the only person in the world who didn't already know this, but I was shocked, shocked I tell you, to discover that Bo Diddley DID NOT play "Who Do You Love" using what has become known as the Bo Diddley beat! Yes, you heard me correctly. Everybody plays "Who Do You Love" using the Bo Diddley beat EXCEPT Bo Diddley!
The famous Bo Diddley rhythm comes from the song "Hey, Bo Diddley" NOT "Who Do You Love". Listen and judge for yourself. I know this is probably going to rock the very foundation of everything you thought you knew, but when you recover I'd like to know what you think about this.
Personally, I like "Who Do You Love" better when played with the Bo Didley beat - as Quick Silver and Thorogood played it.
Apparently, I have too much free time on my hands today. I really should be practicing.

Yeah, it's a great song. It's been covered by a lot of artists. I may have first heard it by The Doors. Bo Diddley also had some other good blues songs - if I'm not mistaken, he also wrote "Before You Accuse Me" - covered famously by Eric Clapton. The Bo Diddley beat also had several variations, but I think you're right - the "classic" Bo Diddley beat was from the song "Hey! Bo Diddley".
