I just recorded the lead and rhythm parts along with my drum machine. It's kind of sucky but if I play through that solo one more time today I think my brain's gong to turn to mush Let me know what you think - good or bad. Especially bad. I can't learn from my mistakes unless they're pointed out to me. soundcloud.com/jack-c8/minor-blues-1

Nicely done, Jack. Loved your tone - was that thru the Line 6 unit? Also love that you did both rhythm and lead parts - I really think that helps "bring it together". My only criticism would be that your bends have a tendency to be slightly flat. I think most of us share this trait - thus there's lots of discussions on the forum about practicing bends. Look forward to hearing some more! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys! Yeah that was the Line 6. That Pod Farm's got hundreds of presets, I've only tried maybe 15% of them. And thanks for the input on the bends. I though some of that sounded a bit off and now I know I definitely need to work on that more.

Yeah, not only do you have hundreds of presets (on Pod Farm), but you can adjust them all, or make your own equipment combos. It's almost completely overwhelming. I've found it's very easy to spend way too much time playing with all that virtual equipment - at the expense of less time playing!

OK, Jack, I've got some good news and some bad news for you. The good news is that that was beautifully done and I'm impressed. Minor Blues was my 1st attempt at recording and uploading a couple of months ago, and your version is much better. Your tone is excellent, so no more griping about the UX2. Your touch and the feeling you put into this is also excellent. Well done! The bad news is that you are now a member of the (slightly) flat bends club. Welcome to aboard! Them bends is a bitch. Looking forward to hearing more uploads. Phil PS. Just curious, what gauge strings are you using.

That sounded great. It had a nice feel to it. Like Phil said, there were two or three bends that could stand to be bent a bit more. But really, it was great. I really need to start recording myself at practice. I admire you guys for recording and sharing with us. It's such a good learning tool. Looking forward to hearing more of your recordings.

Thanks so much for the feedback guys! I've got a terrible ear for pitches and I thought my bends sounded a little off, but now I know it's an area I really need to work on. I'm already coming up with practice exercises to give it some extra attention. I think my problem with that Pod was mainly that I was so used to hearing my sound on my old equipment that anything different (even if was actually a lot better) sounded bad to my ears. So I'll quit my whining now I've only started to fool around with that thing, It'll take months for me to explore all the sounds I can get out of it. Phil I'm using 9's. Or at least I think I am; the last time I put new strings on my Strat was years ago lol. Though I just put a new set of 9's on my Ibanez and I'm sure I'd notice if I had 9's on one and 10's on the other. I really should restring that today, I imagine they're just a little bit dead at this point. Tommy you should definitely record some stuff. We'd like to hear you play and I love the feedback I get from you guys. I've never taken lessons or gotten any real feedback from anybody, so it really helps. It makes me practice a lot more too. I can play through a song with a couple of major screw-ups pretty easily, so I thought what will it take to play it with no major screw up, 4 or 5 tries? Yeah more like 100 and it still isn't right.

I don't think I'll ever be completely satisfied with the sound I get from modeling software compared to the rich full sound I get from my cheap little Fender Mustang I. However, it's convenient using the interface vs. mic the amp, and I can play at 1:00am. I started off with Ernie Ball 11's and went to DR Pure Blues 10's. I really like the DR's. I broke a string and went back to the 11's because I still have 2 sets and want to use them. I'm definitely going to stick with the DR 10's the next time I change strings. I do have to say that the 11's will certainly build up finger strength. We had a discussion about gauge a while back and John G. recommended 11's and no lighter than 10's. Really helps with memorizing the tune, doesn't it? The worst is I when I screw up in the last bar of take 99. I was tempted to learn how to "punch in" with the recording software, but then that would defeat my purpose. I'm trying to learn to play better, not become a record producer. Phil

Yeah eventually I'd like to get a Bugera V22 tube amp, I've listened to it on YouTube or someplace and it seems to be able to do everything from clean to crunchy and do it great. I used to have a Peavey Deuce tube amp and loved that thing, never should have sold it. Having said that though I wouldn't have much opportunity to use it as I don't want to subject my family to listening to me practice the same thing over and over.
Thanks for the tip on the strings. I know a lot of people recommend something heavier for better tone. I'll have to check out those DR's and see if I can notice a difference. I've tried 10's in the past but that was back in my heavy metal days and I played with so much distortion you couldn't tell he difference between anything.
As far as recording oh yeah, notice how I almost completely miss the last 4 notes of minor blues? LOL. I wasn't trying to play those quite so quietly. I'm tempted to punch in and out too but as you said that defeats the purpose. Fine if you're recording your own stuff and want to fix it for the final product, but it doesn't make much sense when you're practicing something for the sake of getting better.

I agree nicely played, and I noted the same as Phil little flat on the bends, could be your strings a little dead affecting the pitch a little. I read an article talking about bending and apparently that is one of the things Eric Clapton still practices. I connect up my tuner and practice bending 1 step, and do it on several notes.
I am using 10.5s on my guitar, I really like them but have a pack go BB king signatures that are 10's to try, any just moved up from 9's.
I just got my BYCU material today so hopefully I can record some stuff , last time I tried got myself so nervous I kept messing the tune up. Anyway great job, you guys are giving me hope.

I recorded a little practice track for myself where I play a single note for ten bars and then another etc. and just play along and try to bend up to the pitch I'm hearing on the track. Hopefully that will yield some results over time. I'll have to get some 10's next time I buy strings. See how that sounds. I feel the same way about recording too lol, I suppose that happens to everyone and (hopefully) the more you do it the less stressed out you get.

That's not a bad idea, I might try that. I am hoping the recording is a prep for playing live.
