Just wanted to know if you have any thoughts/feelings or preferences to your guitars/gear.
So, at the moment, it seems I prefer strings that start at 10s. I like the feel, the tension in the bending and, to my ear, they sound better through my amp. I also like picks that are 1mm - 1.14mm thick; currently these are Tortex Dunlop Jazz III XL series.
You?

I prefer 9s, but working on this BB King tune, I'm using my Sheraton II which has 10s. They're fine and I like the feel of having something with a bit more "girth" under my fingers. If I was working on something like "Cheap Runs" however, I'd definitely go with 9's. They just require less effort and therefore let you play faster.
For picks I normally use the Dunlop Jazz III XL's. But I switch around, there's a Dunlop nylon .73 mm and .88mm on my desk and I'll quite often grab one of those. For solos that are right at the limit of my abilities I'll always use the Jazz III's, but for anything easier it really doesn't make much difference. If there's a lot of fast strumming I might even pull out a .60mm pick. I've got some .50mm picks, but meh...that's not much more than a piece of paper lol.

I'm a "09's" guy as far as strings. Have played around with heavier sets in the past, but have felt like I might as well go back to playing an acoustic. I also tried 08's when I was first learning bending years ago. I couldn't hardly fret those without bending them out of tune.
For years I just used plain old Fender heavy picks. I've switched to Dunlop max-grips the past few years, and I do like the max grip surface - seems to slip a lot less. The ones I mostly use are 1.14 mm, but recently got some 0.88 mm ones just to try something lighter. Not a tremendous difference in those two picks, so I might eventually get some even lighter ones. Sounds like maybe I need to get some Jazz III's to fit in around here!

I use Dunlop Jazz III picks and 10s mostly. My guitar instructor convinced me to put 095s on my Les Paul because it's so boomy on the bass.

For the boomy bass - have you tried lowering the pickup height on the bass string side? I was getting a very boomy bass on my Ibanez AF75 until I made that ajustment. It really made a difference. After you lower the bass side of the bridge you can also fine tune the pole heights on all strings if needed. I read this in a article that recommended adjusting pickup height and pole height before spending money on a new pickup.

Thanks, Phil. I lowered the pickup height, which helped a little. I should try the other trick as well.

Thanks, Phil. I lowered the pickup height, which helped a little. I should try the other trick as well. Actually, the reduction in boomy-ness should be very noticeable. Maybe you didn't crank it down enough. Here's a picture of my neck bridge. As you can see it is significantly lower on the bass side.

The thing you can do is raise the treble side a little as well, watch out getting to close cause it will affect sustain. I went round and round with my strat pickups lol.

I use 10s, i tried 9s for awhile but started breaking strings to often. Picks I like the dunlop picks as well I use 89mm but starting to like a little thicker, helps get more rack effect.
Love my new tele great tone easy to play, but my elite strat is a work horse and the zexcoil pick ups are awsome.

I've been using Chicken picks 2.5 for the last time. I've also used Jazz 3s before but these slide very easily over the strings. Also chord with upstrokes work good. I play 8,5 string from ghs. Easy Bending.
