Anybody out there? Remains eerily quiet on our little forum... I think I picked up the guitar every day this week. Now I need to work on extending the time. I'm continuing to play around with the electric blues section out of the Sokolow book I referenced last week. Maybe adding in some other stuff would be good. Also worked some on "Rock Me Baby" again. Not much else to report here.

I'm here I had a pretty good week, just working on "Mr. Crowley." The solos have some really fast stuff in them, hopefully if I really bust my butt for the next two weeks I can get them up to speed. Still having fun with the keyboard, I can play the intro part "moderately" well - actually played it once (out of maybe 20 times) without any mistakes this morning Haven't been doing too good on my sight reading for 5 minutes a day; that makes my brain hurt. Hope everyone is doing well and finding some time to play

Hi Guys,
First week back in the real world. My plan was to begin increasing the amount of playing I'm doing. Was reasonably successful with that in the sense of playing more, but I was only able to add a few minutes a day before it felt like I was on the cusp of discomfort. So I'm going to have to go a little slower than I'd hoped.

Hola! I am having some issues with the Delta mood. My alternate picking is not great and I keep hitting the wrong string!! So frustrating, as It doesn't seem like a hard thing to do but... gosh I am struggling with it! Any exercise or tip that could help me develop this particular aspect of my technique is welcome!

Alternate picking is not introduced until lesson 10 in my copy of BYCU (I've got the first version, maybe this has changed in newer versions). Alternate picking is introduced in scale practice, where all playing is on adjacent strings. Delta Mood can certainly be played with alternate picking, but will also involve string skipping (where notes are NOT on adjacent strings), as well as having notes of differing durations (both quarter notes and eighth notes) within a measure in 12/8 time. If you want to practice alternate picking with Delta Mood, I'd suggest to start with only the first bar (the one after the pickup bar), and slow it WAY down, and play it down pick, up pick, down pick, up pick... All the down picks will be on the quarter notes, and the up picks will all be eighth notes (the third "up pick" in the measure will have the left hand slide associated with it AND will involve skipping from the 6th string to the third string with the picking hand). Play this single bar slowly over and over and over this way (maybe start 30 or 35 bpm or slower if needed). When you are feeling good with it at this speed, try increasing the bpm slowly (maybe by 5 bpm at a time) until you can play it smoothly at that speed. Then increase the tempo a little further. Repeat this until you get bar 1 up to speed. Once you've got bar 1 up to speed, do the same with bar 2 (which is very similar to bar 1). After you've got that down, then you've got to tackle the A7 and the B7 bars. Those two bars throw a little different rhythm twist at you with triplet eighth notes in the second beat, which will throw your up-down pattern off the beat. I would suggest to play those descending triplet notes as "up - down - down", and then resume your same "up - down - up - down" pattern (so you continue to always pick down on the beat). If that doesn't make any sense let me know, and I'll see if I can clarify. Good luck! Stick with it and you CAN play it this way, but incorporating a new technique like this always takes some time! You are not only learning the tune, but you are also learning a new (and VERY useful technique).
