I'm still waiting for the Frank Vignola collaboration project to be put together. Some people were late with their contributions. Imagine having to deal with 18 guitarists. It must be like herding cats. Last week I bought an AT2020 condenser mic to mic my amp. I have an SM57. I know the Sm57 has been the go to mic for miking amps in studios but I wasn't getting a loud enough sound. The wave indicator in Reaper looked like a straight thin pencil line and increasing the gain just introduced a lot of hiss. I think the amp has to be really cranked up for the SM57 to work its magic. I borrowed my son's AT2020 for the last recording and liked the results so I bit the bullet and bought one. It's a terrific mic for the money ($100). I would prefer to simply go direct through the Focusrite and use simulators or emulators or whatever you call them. Distorted guitars sound great recorded direct. However, I've never been able to get a clean, jazzy kind of tone that I was happy with. It always sounded harsh and artificial to my ears. I'm much happier with the tone I get by miking the amp. Of course, I'm still not 100% happy and always think everybody else has a better tone.

Hey! Haven't practiced nearly half as much as I should have, I just realized that my next lesson is coming up tomorrow, so let's see how that goes. Momentarily, I'm working on a particular Jazz standard, going through all the routines - learn the harmony, learn the melody, use that scale, try that arp etc. pp. At least I have the opportunity to pt that stuff to test by playing with someone... even if that's a rather humbling experience at times. However, I'm a little torn apart between following in Jack's footsteps who is continuing to learn how to play and perform lifelong favorite songs of his, or if I should continue the spiraling path down to Jazz hell... it just won't let me go, and I even don't know if that's my direction. But, so far, so good! I'm still clinging to some hope for my PC, but maybe I should just get a new one instead of revamping my zombified over and over again... Greetings, T. Come on T. Pull yourself together. You can't leave me alone down here.

Well another bad/non-existent guitar week here. Makes my weekly check-in easy. Phil, I thought you needed plenty of source volume to record just about anything with a condenser mic? I use direct input with amp simulators for everything, but I agree that a clean guitar sound is the hardest thing to try to emulate. Tbone, sometimes it is more economical and expedient just to replace an old computer rather than to sink more money into it. Sometimes you can find really good deals on refurbished models. Good luck - I always hate that quandary of when to just give up on an old computer.

Don't go down that hellish route Tony! Come back...come to the light side I had a pretty busy week and maybe got in 1 - 1 1/2 hours a day. Little Wing is coming along pretty well - yesterday I thought I was about ready to start working on getting it recorded, today I think it still needs a ton of work. So, business as usual Got most (though not all) of the problems parts going somewhat well, the solo is getting some much-needed attention, and I still need to learn the glockenspiel part that goes under the solo. I submitted a rough draft of it for the "hotseats" thing at that other site and "that other guy" got a real kick out of the glockenspiel. He suggested I learn to improvise in the style of Little Wing, which I very much mean to do. If I ever find the time Hopefully this week will be less busy and I can get some good, focused practicing in.

I could be wrong, but I don't have to turn up the gain very much to get a good volume.

Well medium week of practice, too much life issues plus getting ready to fly to the States on Saturday. Week after I get back looks like we have our end of course concert, which no way in hell are we ready to play. Lol So I have blue bossa down pretty solid and WPB inspired me to do the AM EP90 lesson. I have the rhythm groove pretty solid, working on the solo now.
Been looking possibly getting a modeling amp like the Kemper, but I like using my pedal board anyone had any test experience with anything like that?

I had a lot to deal with on the personal front (nothing bad, just a lot of things), so haven't played much for the last couple of weeks. I didn't do a recording for the licks, but I will try to get back at it.

I'm working on the Little Wing video - think I should go with the "inspiring corporate background music" preset? That would certainly be my choice. BTW, I kept clicking on that image and couldn't get the video to play.

Just be patient Phil I spent yesterday messing around with the guitar sound - I put a Leslie rotating speaker on it, which is what Jimi used, and it sounds really nice in Reaper, but when I put it in the video editor it compresses the audio, takes away all the subtleties, and it just sounds like crap. I was trying to figure out how to get it to render in uncompressed audio (which is where I came across the "inspiring corporate background music" thing lol), but even if I could do that once I upload it I imagine it would get compressed again. So I'll probably just go with a more clean sound. Also having problems with the glockenspiel sound as it's right in the same frequency range as the guitar - I put a low pass filter on it to get rid of the highs during the verses...anyway I'm still messing around with that. Need to work on the solo some more, I still haven't gotten a satisfactory take. Gimme more time man, more time
