OK, took a little longer to get this posted than I intended, but here is a Guitar Pro version of our next BLYCU challenge. This GP demo includes: bars 1 & 2 - Lick 48 bars 3 & 4 - Lick 50 bars 5 & 6 - Lick 49 bars 9 & 10 - Lick 47 bars 11 & 12 - Lick 46 The licks for this challenge are 46 and 47 (not all of these at once). We'll make due date on this one Sunday, April 25 (since I'm so late getting it posted). After that, let's try to get back to the two week cycle. BLYCU Chapter 4 - 01.mp3 (876.14 KB) Had to lower the mp3 sampling rate for this, so if it sounds too bad, let me know and I'll e-mail you a better one. Bruce

The GP rendition sounds terrific - this chapter is going to be a lot of fun!

The GP rendition sounds terrific - this chapter is going to be a lot of fun! I agree, Joachim. The licks look pretty hard, but that GP version sounds pretty cool. I'm looking forward to getting back into it!

I wish I had the same enthusiasm you guys do! The one thing I'm looking forward to is that the backing track (at least the first chorus) is a simple shuffle that leaves a lot of wide open space making it a little easier to get my head around stuff. I still don't know what I'm going to do with a septuplet of sixteenth-notes in 12/8 over a lump-de-lump shuffle though.

Bruce, particularly in this chapter I don't think I could have figured out the timing without your GP rendition - it's a great help!

I'm pretty dependent on them too. I usually start with a slowed down version of JGs slow version to to get used to the feel of it, but then I switch over to the GP, playing along with it over and over until it sinks in. It works, but it's a slow process. As the degree of difficulty ramps up it's taking several weeks before I can play these along with backing. I keep waiting for the part where my ability to pick things up is supposed to accelerate.

I got a bad on start on the chapter - have so things going on right now that I didn't find time to make a recording. I did have some ideas for a chorus, though, so if I don't make it today, I will get it done during the week.

Joachim, the good news is the due date is next weekend per Bruce's original post. I think Bruce will not flunk you for failing to complete the assignment one week early! I've put a lot of time in on 46 and 47 and am just barely able to play along with the GP at reduced tempo. These two are among those we've encountered in BLYCU that require my fretting hand/fingers to move in ways I've never made them move before. That makes me very excited because it would tend to open up new possibilities in what I can play assuming I reach some competence level. However, at my age it is a very slow process. I've not given up on getting something recorded for next week, but it is not a certainty either.

Yes, next Sunday, Joachim. Grampa, I'm about where you are - playing along at reduced speed. I like these licks, though.

Strong work, Grampa! I thought your licks 46 and 47 sounded good (along with your "filler"). These are certainly deceptively hard licks. I'm having to go to work this weekend (for a little less than 10 more weeks now!), so I'll try to record something later tonight when I get home. I'll also post the next challenge, which will be the next two licks (48 & 49) - both of which were included in the Guitar Pro mp3 for this challenge!

Grampa I thought that was outstanding - maybe not technically perfect but you made up for it with a fantastic guitar sound and lots of attitude and soul. I'd say your efforts are definitely paying off! Those are some damned cool licks as well

Grampa, that was cool as hell! Here's what I recorded: Thanks, Joachim. As I've come to expect, you were totally on top of these two and about all I can say is that I hope one day I can play stuff like these as wee as you!

Thanks, Bruce. Nothing deceptive about them. I could tell from the transcriptions in the book I was in trouble with them!

I'd say your efforts are definitely paying off! Those are some damned cool licks as well Thanks, Jack. The main tone was a Fender Princeton model (my current favorite) set clean with a couple of drive pedals in front and the guitar volume backed off just a little. I like your description of the effort better than mine, haha.
I've always told myself what I play is less important than how I play it. That's not some profound insightful wisdom, it's a face-saving thing for someone who can play almost nothing correctly despite setting out to do just that every time I try to tackle something. Kind of like Pee Wee Herman saying, "I meant to do that," after wrecking his bike.

OK, here's my belated take. Just the lick this time, no full chorus. I could do it pretty good at 90% speed, but still something to be desired at full speed.
Joachim, yours is really nice. What I've learned this go around is that even three weeks isn't enough for me to get these up to snuff, and it is certainly not enough to "own" them, or make them part of my useable vocabulary...
I'll post my other "smackdown fodder" in the Jazz section of the forum.

Hey Bruce, good job on those--you are obviously on the right track with them. I'm in the same boat, the degree of difficulty has ramped up and it's really difficult to get these licks assimilated in 2 weeks or even three.

Should we settle on a couple of licks for next time? We can just use Bruce's GP demo from last time.

Sorry, Joachim, I thought I had said we'd take licks 48 and 49 next - but looks like I never put up a formal thread. Yes, they are included in the GP demo in this thread. Man, you turn 60, and your mind just goes... Hope you're holding up through this tumultuous period in your life!
