You're a day early again Tony I'm still working on Hotel California. I got a satisfactory recording made of the intro at the beginning of the week, then of course by then end of the week decided I wasn't happy with it, so yesterday I did a whole bunch more takes of it. Thought I was playing it so beautifully until I listened back to it and said "well, this is crap." Oh well, at least I've got the semi-satisfactory one. The little 6-string acoustic accompaniment at the beginning is done, and there may be another part or two that are okay. There's that part where you strum muted strings that is giving me problems - it's like 1-e-and-a 2-e-and-a with the strums on the "and-a" with a strong anticipation of the downbeat. I played them with a downstroke followed by an upstroke, which didn't sound right, so I've decided it's an upstroke and a downstroke. Then after doing a few takes of it (the song is 7 minutes, that probably goes on for 5), it seemed I was rushing it, so...work continues. Oddly enough that's right up in the front of the mix, so it needs to be played pretty well. Then there's the part I was playing as double-stops which I'm now playing on two separate guitars. Most of it is whole notes, so yeah, almost as exciting to work on as the muted strumming. I'm kind of piecing together a video of everything as I go. Got a new camera, a Logitech StreamCam, but of course it only has a USB C plug so now I'm waiting for an adapter cable to arrive (today hopefully) before I can see how it works. And it's spring now, so one practice session got replaced with tilling the garden...and it's only going to get worse from here. No wonder I like winter so much

Tbone, I hope you can get your motivation back. I've definitely had periods of time like that, so I can feel your pain! Probably all of us have. Jack, I'm anxious to hear what you can do with Hotel California. That's an ambitious project to take on - long song, lots of pretty iconic guitar parts. I'm sure it will be much better than you'll think it is! I've been struggling with time management/availability. Been pretty busy with work, and been trying to get my lazy carcass off the couch and do some walking. I have just had a bear of a time with our BLYCU licks this go around, but I don't think I've been faithfully and consistently putting the time into it.
It is turning into spring! I for one, am glad to see it. Jack, I got rid of lawn chores by selling the house and moving into an apartment several years ago. Of course, I didn't actually do the lawn chores - what I actually got rid of was paying a lawn service to take care of the yard, which had basically become an expensive dog bathroom since the kids had long since left home...

Bruce, I like to complain about yard work but, truth be told, I do kind of enjoy gardening, at least in the spring. Watching all the little plants come up etc. And my constant battle with the bunnies - I put a chicken wire fence around the garden but last year there were baby bunnies and if there was 1/2" of space between the fence and the ground, those little SOB's would get in there. Of course then they were stuck in there because they were too stupid to figure out how to get out. One of them got a good soaking with the hose that he won't soon forget I do get tired of the whole thing by summer though, when it requires constant weeding and pruning. And cherry tomatoes until we've got the damned things coming out of our ears lol.

Tony, Once again you've upset the balance of the universe and now tomorrow will be Monday for me. I spent most of the week trying to learn a 32-bar solo which, as always, is consuming way too much time. Yesterday I got sidetracked by a tutorial on YouTube for an Emily Remler Jazz Blues called "Blues for Herb". Very cool tune. Being a Blues I was able to learn it in one sitting (the main 12-bar melody, not her solos). The problem now is being able to play it in tempo and she plays it incredibly fast. There are a couple of YT videos of her playing it. One where she's playing it solo on an Ovation acoustic. Her Jazz Blues playing was amazing. Oh hell, I'll just post the link.

Sorry for the confusion, guys, but I guess the Easter bunny would have sorted this out for you tomorrow (not for Jack, though - bunnies are not goldfish). Being a big fan of Emily, I posted the video above here years ago. I even transcribed the theme, but I gave up on the solos soon... then I did a little bit of time traveling and actually went back to Herb himself in order to learn a few solos from him (which I guess I posted here as well)... After that, I moved even further back to Charlie who wrote the source code... That's when I decided I'll just have to live with the fact that there are things you (well, that's me) can't learn. But you can see there's a straight line from CC over HE to ER. That was either before my time or before my interest in Jazz. (You see, you're always a step ahead). Anyway you may be interested in this tutorial. He really has a good ear and has accurately nailed the chords she's using. I have another transcription which is awful - not even close on the chords.
I like your going back to the source thing. Remler was also heavily influenced by Wes Montgomery. You can hear a lot of his stuff in her playing. But she put her own stamp on everything.

Happy Easter or what the non practicing christian call 'Sunday'
I'm with @tbone I my self have been in a total music funk. I've not even been on youtube. I have been picking up the guitar more the couple of week just noodling around. I did do some retail therapy this week and picked up some plugins which did help with some creativity and motivation. Hopefully it's a sign of my turning things around.

I stuck to my plan so a successful week in that regard. Finally got something on tape from the recent BLYCU installment. My unthusiasm has swooned over the last 4-6 weeks, which means practice hasn't been fun, rather, more like doing the laundry. Something you've got to keep up with.Did start a new scale sequence Sunday. I mentioned elsewhere that I feel like I'm regressing more than progressing.

Well, it's been a good week. I have been playing lots and working out a direction for the future. One thing I miss from working through the BYCU books is a progression path with variety. As such, I have now included that in my guitar work...
From this day forward I'm working through Troy Stetina's Total Rock Guitar as well as my ActiveMelody stuff. It's my long goal focus. So, tonight I recorded the first track - Hair Rock!
Dial it up to 11 and enjoy...

Awesome stuff, WPB. Total Rock Guitar is a great book, I plan on digging back into it come June or July, I haven’t used it in a long time and I figure by then I’ll probably want a break from my current method books I’m using. Also nice shirt! It’s clever, pops Grampaler, when guitar gets like that it can be rough. Sometimes putting it aside for a bit can let the desire regenerate, or maybe you just need new inspiration, whether that be in the form of listening to your fave tunes, finding some new tunes, creating your own tunes, whatever it may be... I hope soon guitar feels less like doing laundry and more like sitting down for your favourite dish, on an empty stomach!
