Well, here's the video collaboration I was involved in. The guys who did the video and audio editing really did a great job. The melody is in 3 part harmony. My part was in 5ths. Then I got to do an 8 bar solo at the end of the 3rd chorus. You'll see my mug at around 3:20 Most of these guys can play circles around me. I'm just happy they let me participate. Now I can tell people I played with Frank Vignola.

That was really excellent Phil! You're definitely the coolest dude in the video, just kickin' back like "eh, I got this." You solo was great, those octaves at the beginning reminded me of "Three Ways to Say It" from John's book. Must give you a nice feeling knowing you've played with Frank Vignola. Did you say you recorded a longer solo? You should post it, I'd love to hear the whole thing.

Very cool, Phil. What a neat project to get to participate in! Kudos to both the audio and video production - that must have been a real bear. Nice job on your solo, Phil.

Wow, I thought Vignola sounded familiar - and that he seemed pretty sophisticated for a bed-room player! Haha...

Thanks for the kudos, guys. That was a cool collaboration. 17 people from 7 different countries.
I had no idea what the final product would sound like since all I saw was my assigned part. Don't know who did the arrangement, but they sure did a good job. And the video editing - imagine putting all that together. The sound guy also did a great job leveling out the volume each of our submissions.
Frank Vignola is quite a guy taking a back seat and letting his students have the spotlight. He played rhythm throughout the song.
If I looked relaxed I can assure you I wasn't. I already knew how good some of these other players were. It may not be noticeable in the final product but I really rushed the last few notes of my solo. However, I was very happy with the tone I got. This is the first time I ever mic-ed the amp. I tried a Shure SM57 and an Audio Technica AT2020 condenser mic. The AT2020 produced a noticeably better sound.
Jack - I do have a complete 32 bar solo recorded with a couple of flubs. I'll post it once I edit it. I remember how hard it was learning to play those octaves in "3 Ways..." I couldn't maintain the distance between my fingers when moving around. I'll have to take another crack at that song.

Phil you fit right in your too modest, loved your solo. I find it interesting how all the different guitars messed together tone wise. Yeah excellent editing work as well, my son knows how do that stuff.

Jack,
Here's the whole solo. I flubbed in the 1st 8 bars and was way off on my timing on the bridge. The audio is how it was recorded. No EQ or compression. Just a blending of the camera mic and the AT2020.
Since the "A" sections of this tune are in C minor with a minor 1-2-5 chord vamp any Blues licks will work. The bridge goes to the relative major. I copied the 8 bar bridge solo from someone else on the Internet and the final 4 bars are an Emily Remler blues lick. Everything else is my own ideas or things floating around in my head that I probably heard at some time.

I flubbed in the 1st 8 bars and was way off on my timing on the bridge. I think I heard a story once about Merle Travis telling another guitarist who was bemoaning how they flubbed what they were intending to play: "Well, I didn't hear what you were intending to play, but I heard what you did play, and that sounded good." Very applicable here, Phil.

Phil, sorry for being tardy giving this a listen. From the thread title I just thought it was a performance video with no connection to the board. That was fun to watch and you more than held your own. I was waiting for *that guy* to pop up with a decked out Ibanez super strat and shred it. Never happened but still an awesome group project!
